power assisted valve

Unread postAuthor: taterjim » Tue Jan 24, 2006 9:58 pm

This under over type cannon,a fairly large one has an assisted valve gizmo I made from pvc,a bolt, end caps, two washers ,piece of rubber, two nuts etc.
I saw the idea for a ram on this forum a few weeks ago and thought I would try it. It is just put together in this picture with duct tape and bungee cord to see if it would work and it worked better than I expected. It will shoot great er distances than any cannon I have built so far.

since this photo was taken I have attached the ram more permanently and added a longer barrel.

this is the backside showing how air is tapped from the tank through a push button type blow gun ,which has been drilled for better air flow. the cannon is held near the center when fired for balance and to clear the ram and valve when they open.

Since I know it willl come up I will give a little more detail on how the ram is
connected to the valve, The long bolt from the ram has a shorter bolt welded to the end at a right angle, the valve has a sturdy eye bolt threaded through the end and a nut to hold it in place the short bolt is slipped through the eye bolt with a washer on either side and a nut to hold it on. It works smoothly and doesn't snag.

I now have a large hose clamp holding the assembly together ,but unfortunatelly the bungee cord seems necessary to allow the unit a little flex
for smooth operation, It would work without it ,but it acts like a shock absorber and so far ,about 15 or 20 shots ,it has been trouble free except for a need to oil the ram unit at least once a week..A little better paint job might be forthcoming. As shown in the picture ,it is so loud when firing ,that I lenghtened the barrel to ablorb some of the power , and that increased the distance it will shoot generously. It is still in developmejavascriptemoticon(':P')
Razznt and already looks different than the picure ,actually it lookd a lot better.
