Feasable, but your trip string would have to be in a high traffic area and unnoticable. Likewise, the ball valve would not discharge as fast as a burst disk or diaphragm valve, even with an external helper spring. Response time would be slower, meaning a smaller dispersion of the load. This unit seems to be unidirectional as well... So your enemy would have to be on the correct side. Just some constructive criticism, but you may want to make some design modifications to ensure a better blast radius and dispersion.

Crowley, your design is a good one, and would be somewhat compact and practical to carrrel around except for a couple flaws, which you said there would be (nothing's perfect).
1. It can't hold enough paint for anyone to care about.
2. The paint would spill out without a stopper of some type.
3. Usually you can't get DWV fittings in sizes under 1 1/2" (well, I can't, I haven't seen anywhere anyone can)
4. And then there's the problem of securing the spring and hook.

Thanks for that guys.

Well since im not going to use it in a game or anything I might as well build it to give me something to do. Work on the flaws and change it up a bit. For the time delay thing by having a 3point setup with the string the string would have to go backwards first and then across the path. You could figure out the time delay and measure at an average walking speed how far back the string should be from the mine for it to go off as the person walks past it after tripping the mine.

Edit: Im not sure but would paint be able to flow sucessfully through the ball valve? Thats why I added the threaded plug into the diagram.
Also I don't have to use a wye, I could use a tee and a 45* elbow or something.

Ive had another idea wondering around in my head that involve a concept similar to a real 'nade without the bang.

It would be a burst disk mine with a small barrel sticking out with a sharp heavy thing inside the barrel held up by a pin. When the pin is pulled(well when someone trips it) it will release the sharp heavy object through the burst disk triggering it.
Three problems:
1.It may not have enough force to break the burst disk(few layers of tin foil)
2.It may block the barrel and stop paint getting out.
3.It could get shot out at the player.

@Loganphyve -

I was looking at your design....Is that a pressure plate on top and when stepped on it bursts the disk and shoots paint straight up? I been looking over that and wouldnt the players shoe stop the paint coming up if he stepped on it?

i like that design i mgiht build one using paint for my wars in the summer it would be a nice addition but i think im gonna hide a air compresser/tank in leaves and have it trip wire activated...

The purpose of the mine is to get paint or another contaminant on the player, in which case the bottom of the foot still counts. If you wanted to get interesting and disperse more paint, you cound cut channels into the top flange for the paint to escape thru, even when the hole would be covered with shoe. These channels would let the paint flow up to the shoe and the along the bottom of the shoe in between the shoe and top plate. If the ends of the channels were fluted or curved, the paint would spray upward at the end of the channel, increasing dispersion. You could do this from any direction off of the center hole, again solving the question of 360 degree coverage.

I made one, all it is, is a 3'' end cap with a clean out pluf, and in side there is a Co2 tank, and then the clean out plug has a hole in the top for a pic so when you step on it, it will go off.

I had a video I will try and find it.

But yours does look goood.

why dont you put a non-modded sprinkler valve on MrCrowley design instead of the ball valve then you could have an unsuspicious piece of plywood over oviously a puddle of mud or cover it up with dirt if there is no mud around then when you step down on the plywood covering the entire space of the path(so you would have to step on it) it pushes down a push button thus activating the sprinkler valve of course there are other methods instead of the button.............. find a cheap motion detector (the kind that you put at the end of your drive way that sends a wirless signal to your reciever at your house then goes ding ding) and attach wires from the sprinkler valve onto the motion detector that way when somebody walks by it opens the sprinkler valve........or you could use a cheap remote control car and take of the motor and instead of it driving forward when you push the button on the remote it opens the sprinkler valve(this of course would require you to be close enough to see them) ......im just brainstorming and you guys are free to piggy back my ideas 8)

You get a union and cut out a couple sheets of aluminum foil. A union is something that you can open up and put the sheets of aluminum foil inside it. When it gets to a certain pressure it blows.

edit: ha! beat ya to it super spuder

a burst disk is a piece of material that bursts at a certain pressure. people use plastic from pop bottles, aluminum foil, and anything else they can find.

I don't think that wood or other materials would be suitable for a burst disk, as the nature of wood under stress is to splinter... combined with the propulsion by compressed air = shrapnel...
