Mini Piston Gun

Unread postAuthor: ethal1222 » Fri Feb 09, 2007 6:40 pm

This is my first attempt at a piston gun. It has a 2" SCH 80 chamber and a 1/2" SCH 40 barrel. It uses a barrel sealing piston made out of a 1" coupling wrapped in duct tape. After a little tweaking and design adjustment, it's working very reliably. I just finished it and am yet to actually fire anything from it. I'll let you know know what happens when I do though.

Are you going to paint it?

I wonder how much deeper the ocean would be without sponges.
Right now I'm having amnesia and deja vu at the same time. I think I've forgotten this before.

I'm not sure if I'll paint it or not. I know most people think plain pvc is boring but I kind of like the look of this gun as it is.

My thoughts exactly VH man. I really like the way the SCH 80 looks.

It's a 1/4" ball valve.

I just took a few test shots. With some toilet paper wadding, it shot AA batteries clear out of sight at 70 psi. They were hard to see as fast as they were going. I heard one of them hit a tree about 100 yards away and it made a nice loud "WHACK" that echoed really well.

Nice, glad to see the valve is working. Crab apples are a great and cheap ammo in the mid-late summer.

Like i said, thats a shweet cannon..... youre using 1/2 inch pipe as a barrel right? pump it up to 30 PSI and shoot nerf darts....... its wicked fun and accurate. or, you could shoot marbles.........

Very nice. If the piston is floating within the sch80 pipe, try using a 1 1/2" plug for a piston. It will be a near perfect fit. Look for DURA brand plugs which have the plug wall opposite from the hex, those will work best.

Thanks Arsenal, I didn't think of that. I'll keep my eyes open for one. Generally, the only brands of fittings I can find are LASCO and MILTON. Do you think they would work?

marbles are the most effective and yet available ammo you can get. Pretty dense, they're accurate up to 20 meters, well, not as accurate as an air rifle, but pretty accurate though. But, do not underestiate the kinetic energy of a marble, that's an advise if you haven't fired one yet.

They could, but the hex end is also the "plug" end which has the wall. You could always lathe down the hex.

If you found a DURA plug, you can just cut the hex end off because the wall is opposite it. The you would have a nice piston.

That's what I thought you were talking about Arsenal. Do you know of anywhere that sells DURA fittings?
