Wrinkled ductape on piston

Unread postAuthor: noob of noobs » Sat Sep 15, 2007 10:08 pm

As many of you may know, I'm trying to build a barrel sealing piston valve. Yes, it is taking ages, thanks to my new schedule which involves school, rehersal, homework, and very little else.
Anyway, I'm now having trouble with the piston, which has to do the piston's sealing abilities. The piston is a 1" femal adapter with some broken bicycle tube bolted onto the end, wrapped in duct tape. When I make it, it's fine, and moves about very well. When I get back to working on it a day later, the duct tape is wrinkled a lot, and doesn't slide well.
Here's a picture. http://img166.imageshack.us/my.php?image=img2409vs7.jpg (Sorry for the fuzzy picture.)
Does anyone know how to fix this, or at least tell me why this is happening?

Thanks for your time.

on my "little-piston-in-tee gun", the duct tape gets torn to shreds after just a few shots, but it still works just fine. ive taken 500+ shot with it and it has no problem even though the duct tape is all torn up.

i think you just didnt wrap it tight enough.

what i suggest (if possible) is wrap left to right, then back left again. that way it cant do that anymore. its a poor explination, i know, but just try it.

The tape could possibly be stretching because it is wrapped tight onto the piston, combined with lube on the tapes glue, the tape could stretch, then the tape lose its stickiness and wrinkle due to the stretched tape.

It could also be from the heat created from friction and from the piston moving, i made dowel ammo and used that tape to make it fit well, and it wrinkled after some use.

I could be wrong, but its just a few thoughts.

EDIT: Hi's solution would probably work

That looks like a likely problem, but I'm sure no one would wrap it like that and think it's ok. Has the tape been in contact with any solvent or lube?

Sorry, I don't quite understand your instructions. Are you suggesting that I wrap it in multiple pieces of tape?
By the way, would packaging tape (that clear and thin stuff) work as a better layer than duct tape? It can provide a better fit in the piston carrige since it can be wrapped closer to the carrige's diameter since it's thin, and has little friction.

EDIT: Yes, I lubed it in canola oil, and then tried regular house oil. It was also tight when first wrapped.

That's almost certainly your problem, I suggest removing the tape, cleaning and drying the piston then re-applying the tape tightly (yes, packaging tape should work well) and this time using tiny amounts of water-based lube like KY jelly.

KY jelly? What's that?
Also, I read somewhere that one was supposed to try to lube the piston as much as possible. (I think it had some one quote a gay guy who said "anything's possible with enough lube.")
Anyway, thanks, I'll recast my piston and try small amounts of lubricant.

your parents probably have some in their bedside table ;)

Lube should be used sparingly in this case, all you need is a thin film between the outer surface of the piston and the inner surface of the chamber

hahahaha that made my night.
watch out buying the lube though, I went to buy some ky for a piston cannon, and the stupid woman wouldn't sell it to me cause she said, and i quote,
women-"your too young to need lube, I've seen you young people with all sorts of fluids dripping out of you'll, save some money and use those"
me-"ummm....could you please just let me buy it."
women-"no, unless... are you gay?"
me-"uh no, just give me the lube."
women- (turns to the girl I was with) "You like anal don't you?"
that was when I grabbed the lube, left the cash, and hauled ass out.
sorry i just felt i should share that.

I also had the same problem with duct tape so I tried that thick pvc tape, and that worked well, and even better with a few layers of clear tape to hold it down. I also like silicon grease, works pretty well and you don't end up having disturbing conversations with people trying to buy it.

Hah, this thread is great.

Killjoy, did it ever bother you that being gay was the first thing she assumed even though you were with a girl?

Anyway I second the silicon grease that Killjoy mentioned.

or maybe use painters tape instead of duct tape? becuase dont you think the duct tape will make it stick a little even with KY ?

maybe not, but if nothing else works I think you should try a smoother, non rubbery tape.

At that point I was stuck in a state of awe that anyone would actually be discussing this with me that nothing she said fazed me, clearly the women had issues.

This thread is starting to head down the wrong road. Every since i've been reading about members useing tape to size thier pistons i can't help but to think they are going to be problem-matic.

To fix the current wrinkles, slice them long ways and smooth them flat and trim off any extra with a razor blade. Most all tape streches, and i beleave any kind of lube will cause effects like this.

My sagestion is/could be tuff to do but will work.

Take the tape off the piston, and then line the piston cylinder with a cut up aluminum soda can, glue can pieces in with epoxy after dry fit. Will probly take 2 layers to equal the thickness of the tape. The can pieces will also give the piston a really smooth cylinder to slide in.

My parents are divorced.

I'm not quite sure what you're trying to say with the aluminum can. Is the piston coated in the aluminum, or does the piston slide in the aluminum?
