Golf ball barrel? Tennis ball barrel?

Unread postAuthor: BrerRobot » Sat Oct 06, 2007 10:54 am

I'm making my first launcher. I have read some people with 1.5" barrels for golf balls. The 1.5 inch pipe i have will not fit a golf ball.
I also have a 2" pipe. What to do for golf balls?

I also got some canned foam to make pellets and or wadding.

The launcher's airchamber is a 3 foot long 4" pipe reduced to 3" reduced to 1.5" reduced to 1" elbows feeding into a watermaster solenoid. The barrel will be four to four and half feet long.

HOw to make a gold ball barrel?

Theres a thread on the pneumatic cannon discussion that shows how to sleeve 2" inside 2" to make a golf ball barrel.

GB barrel: 1.5" SDR 21
TB barrel: 2.5" SCH 40
1.5" SDR 21 is differnt from regular 1.5" SCH 40 pipe in that is has a thinner wall. Welcom to SpudFiles, and please try to use the search or SpudWiki next time.

I searched how to make a golf ball barrel and GB barrel and Golf ball barrel etc. I just got a bunch of crap saying things like "my new gun has a golf ball barrel" never instructions on how to make or what they used.

THanks though.

BrerRobot,

Our Wiki has an amazing database of info at your disposal, I'd encourage you to check that out.

I can't find the link right now, but recently someone posted a guide to making your own golf ball barrel from 2" pipe. The basic concept is that you cut out a thin strip of the 2" pipe lengthwise (all the way down the length of the pipe). The strip you remove should be something like 1/4 or 3/8" wide. Then you take your now-C-shaped length of 2" pipe and force it into another length of 2" pipe (sleeving it), using clamps/a hammer/etc... as necessary to get it in there. If done properly it yields a barrel with a nice tight fit for golf balls but it's a difficult process.

Call around to plumbing shops, sprinkler places, etc... and ask if they have SDR21 pipe. It's sometimes sold as conduit.

Hope that helps.

Peace,
Pete Zaria.

@benstern,

I went through the first 3 pages of the how-to and didn't see it, maybe I just overlooked it. Thanks for posting the link.

Peace,
Pete Zaria.

Wanna hear something strange....

In NZ/Aussie our GB barrels are 40mm pipe, which effectivly is 1.5" pipe(nominal diameter).

At Ace in SF, I bought a 1.5" female NPT spigot and a male NPT spigot, and guess what?

The 1.5" fittings fit my 40mm GB barrel. That must mean your 1.5" pipe has the same O.D as our 40mm pipe but a different I.D

Make sure all of your parts say NSF-pw on them, especially the 4" and 3" ones. Usually people go for cheaper fittings, and not better quality ones. It's easy to get it wrong, but safety is the top priority.
