first piston with o-rings

Unread postAuthor: spudgunnerwryyyyy » Sun Oct 28, 2007 10:39 pm

Ok, this goes in my piston valve here http://www.spudfiles.com/forums/my-first-piston-valve-t10909.html
'
and it is 1 1/2" pvc half filled with epoxy for strength, it has 1/8" nylon reinforced neoprene as a sealing face and the back is a section of a end cap drilled out with a hole saw.

It is all held together with a bolt.

Looks good. Might be a little on the heavy side because it is filled with epoxy, but who cares.
Howed you cut the o-ring grooves?

Yeah im using white lithium grease,

Its really great stuff, and the o-ring doesn't fit super tight so lube isn't as crucial as most people think,

plus you can wash white lithium off with just soap and hot water,

try that with petroleum based grease.

it pwns

go cut off wheel and half round file

silicon spray is a dry silicon powder siliconegrease is a completely different compound because silicon is way different from silicone.

Very nice job there Gunner!
I made one today out of hot glue-basically like yours except i couldn't find a fat enough o'ring and it is 21mm not 1 1/2 " like yours.
I really like the way you made it :D

^^Heresy I tell you!! of what I do not know, but heresy all the same...Just kidding, I'm kind of suprised the "epoxy gospel" didn't spread earlier on.
Nice work on the o-ring grooves especially with a dremel and file.

You have way more patience then I do when it comes to patience, 5 minutes in I always slip or cut wrong and mess up the groove. Oh well

I did this at 11 at night so i was tired which steadied my nerves, i usually have the same problem you do,

but if you have a fence on your bench you can maneuver the rotary tool up to the pipe and start cutting and then just twist the pipe. This creates a even mostly straight groove.

It doesn't compare to a lathe cut groove but its great for stuff like this with relatively low pressure.

Yeah I like working late because I can stay steady with my work, except when it comes to pistons...
By the way I'm in that 8% of those who still stick with the good stuff.
