I'm very sorry to hear about your Great Grandmother. I'd also have to recommend a sabot shot with the wind (not towards it) at a pretty high angle. I think a sabot made from 2 toilet paper rolls may work. You would have to make alternating holes\slashes in the tubes and fit them over top of each other so that only a small amount of open holes are visible. Them wrapping the tube in tissue paper of paper towels that would easily rip off after firing. Two tubes are needed for strength. You would also need a foam sabot on both end of the tube to hole in the ashes. I've used similar things for time-release flour projectiles... I think this requires a 2" barrel though.

now light it 1 second before you fire the pnuematic.

That's ridiculous, completely illegal, rude, and an ignorant response. Please read the rules of the forum before posting. Legal pyrotechnics are not allowed, why would illegal ones be?

No kidding, have some respect for the poor guy, his great grandma just died and you're suggesting to "blow up" her ashes with an m-80.... my god your pathetic. Not only is it completely against the rules (and the law), but its also morally wrong. You should be ashamed of yourself. You're Grounded!

Sorry 'bout your grandma, though your family had a great idea, i'm so putting this in my will! :D

Anyway I think the string idea is probably your best bet for a 'timed' release, sounds feasible enough.

I would say a hollowed out Styrofoam sabot that is cut in half length wise held together by a piece of scotch tape would work.
The air resistance would tear it in two.
I would try all of these ideas out with sand first. Then choose the best

You mean like solid at one end and open at the front with maybe some wadding?

Sorry about Gramma
I had to shoot ashes of a friend. He wanted to be shot out of a .12 gauge.
I was given the ashes to load a shell.Opened the crimp, dumped the shot/lead
then filled with ashes ,then rolled over the crimp.
The box w/ashes was around the size of a shoe box but a little flatter.
The box had a hidden latch sort of thing, I had to squeeze the sides and pull
a lip. It was something like that, hidden catch, then heavy plastic bag.
It was about 3-5lbs. he was over 220lbs.
When it was time to pop him off I almost shot into the wind but caught my self  Swung the gun and pointed down wind, let him fly. It was a stream of dust/powder 8' long 10-12 inches thick.
Do not listen about sabot , use something like flowers as a wad .Get some flower buds the size of the barrel, remember your not shooting over a chrono.
Do shoot down wind but stay away from other people. Do not try to shoot all the remains, only about a cup/hand full. With dignity scatter the rest of the remains at a meaningful location.
I have shot wood ash out of an air powered gun using a wad. 2-3 cup fulls, there was a little wind eddy that sent ash all over me. Try shooting some ash for practice , made damn sure the wind is going to pull the dust away and don't fu*k it up. It is a solemn moment to be remembered for a life time, your life!!

Yea, exactly, perhaps some tissue paper(or flowers)
The energy should transfer from the sabot to the ashes and send them afar

You could make a paper capsule and attach a small drag chute to it. Score the paper on the sides and attach the chute there so that when it opens, it'll tear the paper down the score lines. I think that could work.

My grandmother died recently and I have been thinking about the same thing. I asked my Dad where he planned on scattering her ashes, but it didn't really sound like he needed a wide distribution so I didn't mention the idea. Although I've still been thinking about making a prototype projectile to test the idea out.

What I was thinking was an acceleration triggered air burst projectile. Something like a 12g CO2 cartridge in a small inner container with a small hole leading out to a weak secondary chamber that is partially filled with ashes. When the projectile is accelerated down the barrel a pin would puncture the CO2 cartridge and CO2 would leak into the secondary chamber, eventually burst it and scatter the ashes. The burst time would be determined by the size of the hole. To be respectful of the place you are scattering you would probably want to recover the inner chunk of the projectile, but since you are bursting it open it probably wouldn't be too hard to make a parachute for it to make it easy to track down.

Of course it would need a lot of testing because it would be pretty bad if it failed to burst. It would also be relatively complex to build, but it would certainly be able to give a wide distribution with a slight breeze.

you got a nice idèa there clide but it is alot beter to wad it up with roses and shoot with the wind. you don't need to go all to complex on it and if you wad with flowers she would have been glad if she could have seen you :)

BTW i love your signature clide xD

I don't understand why you would fire anyone's ashes from a spudgun, it just seems really indecent and morally wrong.

I'd have to agree with rcman, use a rocket.

Well, if I were cremated, I wouldn't have a problem with it (and not just because I was dead) - but I admit I'd want it to be a bit fancier than a few pieces of PVC and a sprinkler valve. Polished copper would be pretty neat.

Still, I'm pretty weird (and I'm not likely to be cremated).
However, if that's what the family has decided, then I respect their decision, as should you. What you can now do is help with designs to help the occasion go smoothly.
