Car Air-con compressor pump?

Unread postAuthor: Mitchza89 » Mon May 19, 2008 8:12 am

Hmm I had an idea. I was looking on Ebay for a compressor and I saw a car air conditioning compressor. Do these things run off A/C or does a drive belt run these things?

Does anyone know the pressure these things output?

Well it's a compressor as far as I know. I just read that the compressor is belt driven. The A/C power just engages/disengages the clutch on the pump. Hmmmm....

Would be great if you could just add a crank shaft or had it to an old mountain bike.

i don't think it is a good deal if you are going to pump over 30psi since a car engine runs at about 4000rpm.

mabe you can make an advanced compressor? a small electical engine and that stuff?

Yeah it's food for thought. I'll get a cheap compressor from the wreckers and see what I can come up with.

I got a mini compressor from True Value for $20. It goes up to 250 PSI. It plugs into a cigarette lighter outlet for a car. It's very convienient. But I wouldn't get it if flow rate is what your looking for. It pumps .7 CFM...

and the fridge compressor can take pressure from the inlet to pump faster.

Well, I have seen air conditioning compressors on cars before (could have even been on this site). It is mainly an off-road type of thing, that way off-roaders can pump air into their tires after they let the air out when going through mud. The compressor that I saw went up to 125 PSI (I think) and there was a tank mounted under the vehicle to store the air.

yeah I suppose you can use belt driven compressors.. the only problems is that they are more difficult to use since you have to get a motor to operate them... this makes everything more expensive and noisey so all in all it would be easier to get a firdge compressor instead
