Paintball grenade launcher

Unread postAuthor: Tshylea » Thu Jun 05, 2008 12:02 pm

I'm making a grenade launcher for playing paintball. I need to use a 2 1/2" barrel to fit the grenades I've made. The problem is that the compressed air tank I use to run my gun is regulated to around 800-850psi, and 2 1/2" steel sch40 pipe isn't commonly used for anything, so I would have to special order it and it would be fairly expensive. Would it be better just to get another regulator and drop the pressure low enough to use PVC?

I just got back from a plumbing whole saler. I have a piece of 2 1/2" sch40 pvc, and the 3" pipe, but apparently they don't make a coupling to go between the two. I mean I can't even get one special ordered because it isn't something that is manufactured. I'm using a co-ax design to save space, but now I don't have a way of connecting the barrel to the chamber. And it has to be a 2 1/2" barrel for the grenade to fit. Ideas?

Surely you could use a combination of reducers, say 3"x2 3/4" then 2 3/4" x 2 1/2" or whatever's available.

I'm on McMaster's site now and I don't see one in sch40 PVC. It doesn't make sense to me that it wouldn't be made, its just a matter of finding where I can get it. If you have a link that would be great.

I'm not firing actual paint grenades at people because yeah, that would be really dangerous. I might try loading it up with a bunch of paintballs for a shotgun effect, but I'm making grenade type charges that are powered by little 12 gram c02 canisters. The kind you get for airsoft and BB guns. They're made from a short piece of 1 1/2" abs with 2 endcaps. Holes will be drilled into the back end and covered by saran wrap or tin foil or something like that. They'll be fired up into the air from this cannon I'm trying to make, and come down, nose first. When they hit I've got a nail rigged up to push itself into the grenade, penetrate the tip of the cartridge and fill the pipe portion of the grenade with c02, thus spraying the paint out of the holes. They'll also double as a landmine. Just burry it in the ground facing downwards, and when someone steps on it and punches the nail into the canister they'd get a foot full of paint.

I assure you they do make it and im looking at it.

How ever to fire anything remotely heavy and dangerous as your proposing is stupid. So i am not helping you.

What happens when they happen to land on someones head?

DO NOT fire that thing. a bladder type grenade, a shot load, or mini vortex is one thing, but firing a piece of abs with a nail in it in a paintball game...no way. The mine thing is okay (if you can get it to work right), but not from a launcher.

Rearrange your intentions, and you will receive the help.

I've no idea why everyone else is refusing to help, but this is the pneumatic cannon discussion, and you're not trying to shoot anyone with it. As far as I can tell, the nail wouldn't be sticking out either.

The part you seek is McMaster-Carr part number 4880K613, although the SCH 80 version (4881K665) would be safer. Actually, it would really be in your best interests to make this out of something a bit sturdier than PVC, like aluminum.

@Tshylea, you obviously know very little about scenario games or the rules, i would realy suggest you read this.

because he is talking about firing something that weights probably a half a pound that could possibly land on someones head.

Paintballers have enough problems iwth dickheads shooting marbles and Ball bearings from their markers all we need is some idiot to fire one of these things into a crowd of people and knock someone clean out.

I've played paintball every single weekend for the past 3 summers. I play with a large group of friends at an abandoned mine, and every person I play with thinks these grenades are a cool idea. I wouldn't fire one if someone was uncomfortable with the idea. The nail won't be pointed outwards. It has a large washer attached to the head for the specific purpose of creating a larger surface area so that the nail will go into the grenade, not into whatever it happens to be hitting. Yes it will weigh a fair amount, and yes, there is a possibility of it hitting someone. Every single person that will be on the field when I fire these will understand this, and believe the risk is acceptable. Besides, it wouldn't weigh enough or be traveling fast enough to hurt much more than a paintball at close range.

Thank you very much DYI, I was looking in the wrong section. I ordered the part in SCH 40 because since this is the first pneumatic of this design I've made, I'd like to learn exactly what works and what could be changed. Once I do I'll weld one together out of steel and run it off the 800 psi from my tank.

I was under the impression that it wasn't being shot at people. If someone manages to get in its way somehow after it's fired... That's their problem, as long as you're not playing on an official field. I can't see something like this doing much more damage than maybe a concussion or a few broken bones anyway. It's not like he's firing it out of a 20x hybrid artillery piece or something.

Timmins Ontario. I'll send you a link to the newspaper story if it somehow managed to excessively hurt someone. I'm waiting for the ABS to dry and I'll test it out in the morning.
