It's prolly not fake bigbob.
A lot of actor's have been killed/injured by blanks thinking they're safe.
Here's a vid of what would happen (this IS prolly fake):

Probably fake? Make that definitely.

As you say, blanks are not completely safe - at short enough range, they have killed, and at up to about 10 or 20 yards, they can still cause injury, depending on the calibre and to what pressure they're loaded.

However, I doubt that VH_man is trying to deceive us.

Is it just the pressure blast that can injury kill someone? maybe there are small particles at high speed?

You can tell how awesome a cannon is by the pressure used.

With blanks, it's both.

I've seen blanks rip a score of small holes through thick tins at a few feet (a fairly standard safety demonstration at Army Cadets when using blanks).
And as for the pressure... well, this ought to give you an idea of what muzzle blast can do: http://youtube.com/watch?v=mKMQy3k5dSc

It's still not something you mess around with.

Depends, when they're going not too fast and not too slow, the entry holes can be round. Only the exit hole probably differs.
