I used a pool noodle once but due to the closed cell foam construction, they tended to get all the closed cell bubbles popped and they go flat after a while. I stopped useing them as I found the dense open cell foam works better.

I just used 2 sheets of 1/4" neoprene for my 3" porter, i have fired it over 100 times, so it seems to be working pretty well.then again i have a really light piston, and and extremely solid pilot plug
