FIM-92A Stinger missile build

Unread postAuthor: thegreatwrzesinski » Mon Jun 14, 2010 12:57 am

ok...I want to build a nerf rocket launcher [for paintball scenario use] resembling a FIM-92A stinger missile system. I would like to use a co2 tank as my power source and would like to make it as close as possible to resemble the FIM-92 system so it needs to be 5 feet long and 3" in diameter for the tube, and for the nerf rocket I need a 2" barrel, also I would like to stay away from batteries because of reliability issues in field conditions [it gets pretty rough]. I have no idea about the rest of the system and this is where I need your help!

I am a very experienced builder and have worked with plenty of pvc in my life.

any ideas?

here is a link to a page on the system:

A two inch coaxial with a 3 inch chamber built like my Mouse Musket would do the job nicely. I built something along those lines but one 1/2 size smaller for golf balls.

Pics of the golf ball one are in this thread.

Mouse Musket build in in my sig below.

Will a build like that 5 feet long do the job?

Note, I just looked up the diameter of the real one. the 2.5 inch pipe is very close to the exact diameter of the real one.

To enable running off a standard CO2 bottle regged to say 450 psi, instead of a coaxial you could have a much smaller metal chamber with a Quick Exhaust Valve (doesn't need to be big as you're using high pressures, 3/4" will do the trick) hooked up inline with the barrel. This setup will fit comfortably in a 3" tube so you'll be good for aesthetics, the QEV can be triggered using a standard blowgun or ball valve.

lol is that a milk crate on top of the stinger

I think that you should build a coaxial piston valve thats the size of a stinger

lol if some players fly helicopters with onboard panitball gatling guns then a stinger missile launcher makes sense.. but otherwise it's a bit out of place, don't you think ??

personally I think you should follow JSR's advice...
but instead of a stinger launcher build a javelin launcher - it is a bit bulkier so it would be easier to hide the QEV and the HPA setup as well

As elegant as the coaxial solution is, I have to go with JSR on this one. By using a metal chamber you avoid having a big brittle PVC tube filled with high pressure air, except for at the moment of firing. For somthing that's going to see rough conditions, a smaller metal chamber will be MUCH safer than a large PVC one.

I wonder how much deeper the ocean would be without sponges.
Right now I'm having amnesia and deja vu at the same time. I think I've forgotten this before.

but instead of a stinger launcher build a javelin launcher

To build a simple cannon to function like a javelin, or even resembling it is nigh on impossible. Something like an AT-4, RPG etc. would probably be more fitting. You could make it look like a javelin if you wished, but it's not terribly aesthetic. (also large and very bulky). However, if your heart is set on a stinger go for it.

I'll also recommend the metal chamber. Easy to service and foolproof. You don't want to drop a 5 foot long PVC tube at 120 psi.

I'm sure with the cumulative efforts of people here we could make a penumatic javelin.. :P

Occasionally we do get a guy to come play with his farm helicopter, pretty much the coolest thing in paintball since the tank :D

Anyways,
The stinger missile uses infrared seeking mechanism to aim, and it has been used as an anti vehicle roll as well. There have actually been instances where the stinger missile system has been successfully used against ground targets in the sandbox by both the marines and the army when other resources were not available, although it it ineffective against heavier armor due to it's proximity shrapnel charge, if it would be fitted with a shaped charge it would work great against heavy armor so that a soldier could have both anti ground and anti air capabilities with one package.

Here is a video with a stinger in action against a parked helicopter, which could potentially be a terrorist in a vehicle.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YbmiAq7pXQE

plus the stinger looks so much scarier than a javelin or a bazooka. :)

and yes, my father came to the United States from Poland.

also, would a sprinkler valve be able to hold the high pressures [I thought it was 850 psi output from a co2 tank?] from the smaller metal chamber? or how would the blowgun work? I have never used a blowgun that wasn't attached to a sprinkler valve, would it be able to transfer the pressure quickly enough through the tiny air hole? isnt it only like 1/4 inch? or at those pressures does it work fine?

one more thing I just noticed...what are spudbux?

I think a Stinger would be cool, regardless of how you use it. However, a 3" chamber and 2" barrel (if you're still going to go that route) would not have a very big chamber.

With a 52" barrel and chamber (leaving you 8" for the piston, pilot area, and a valve in the back) you will have a .84 chamber to barrel ratio. Your barrel will be bigger than your chamber, not a good thing. I encountered this problem when I wanted to build a WWII era M1A1 bazooka, I wanted a 2" barrel and 3" chamber but I ended up going with a 1.5" golfball barrel.

Its up to you, but I would probably go for a 4" chamber (eventhough it would be overkill).

Spudbux are a forum currency, you can buy things for your profile. I'm trying to get enough to buy a signature.

I know i'm a newbie but don't use a sprinkler valve at 850 psi it would blow up on you for sure, they are only rated to 125 psi at the most. you can get a cheap regulator I think and then you will be able to use it with a sprinkler valve then but in my opinion you should get a different type of valve such as a QEV like jackssmirkingrevenge said.

have you seen Goat's M79? its a 2" bore, small cambered co2 powered gun used for paintball. He used a pressure washer for his, but a 3/4" QEV would give you even more power. I'm sorry I don't have the link to the cannon, but search for it, its a great example of an aesthetically pleasing gun used for paintball.

where would I find a regulator that could take a 3000 psi hpa tank down to 125 psi? I googled it and cant find anything...I found a hand pump for a 13ci tank so I could refill in the field [between games that is] then I could use it with the sprinkler valve and have an unlimited air supply [I could even use the pump with my marker setup if I move up to hpa]
