PET bottle BOOM!

Unread postAuthor: imjustpk » Wed Mar 21, 2007 8:14 am

Well I guess I had to have a failure sooner or later in my spudding career. I was pressure testing a 2 liter soda bottle chamber... It didn't pass the test. I was going to see if it could go to 100psi which I thought it probably would, but when it got to 85psi I looked down and the butt end had bulged out. Before I had time to take action it ruptured. I was testing it inside my house because of mean neighbors, and I had it in the tub with water to maybe see if there were any leaks. In short when it blew it broke the shower curtain rod, a bottle of shampoo, ruined a roll of toilet paper, and scared the hell out of me. The moral of the story is, PET bottles probably do work pretty well for most, but be on the safe side and inspect it every now and then.

Feel free to laugh.

A surprise every now and again is good for you as long as you're still alive afterwards

I'm forever going to be against using drinks bottles for pressure chambers... dammed if I use something that can be ruptured with a pin up next to me (I'm serious, a pinprick is enough to focus the stress in the bottles skin and cause it to rip)

Are you going to keep using them?

Well... I think I may still use one that I have, but on a limited basis and at no more than say 60-70psi. I also plan on examining it more closely for any signs of warping before each use. Not to mention I'm probably going to get ear muffs or something cause I'm more afraid of going deaf than really bruising my hands.

Fingers come and go but ears are forever!

Wow that must have been cool in retrospect. How did it blow up? Sharpnel? or just split open at the seams?

I had a similiar experiance, I was pressure testing the bottle but unfortunatly I had the valve stem in the wrong place (in the side of the bottle). I got it to about 90 PSI, and the bottle held just fine for about 10 minutes. I began toying with differnt things while halfway watching a movie (with the bottle on my lap  ). All of a sudden there is an ear popping explosion where there was an instant pain on my inner upper right leg and 2 projectiles bouncing of the walls of my room. Turns out that the valve stem (that I place improperly) fired like a bullet from a gun striking my leg at point blank and then taking off about the room  , I had a bruise about 15" in circumference from that impact and a ringing in my ears.

:withstupid:

@Orpackrat,
Holy crap, that must have been scary. Lesson learned, eh? Put valve stems in a tougher spot and don't put a pressurized 2 liter in your lap...

Did you mean 1.5" ? A 15" bruise would be bigger than your head....

Peace,
Pete Zaria.

15" circumference, (the distance around the out side of the bruise) yes 15 inches.

It just split open and shoot across the room ShowNoMercy. But it still freaked me out.

Loose an eye? The poor guy he could have lost his privates! If he lost an eye he could have a cool eye patch and get a pet parrot, but loose his manhood and... Well I don't know what would happen then, but it probably wouldn't be as cool as an eye patch!

Well if he harbored any ideas of being a woman, then a bit more to then his dreams would have come true. Lol. Yea that would really suck, I knew a kid in high school that had only one testiclce and that alone caused him a lot of pain from otheres, missing everything well that would just suck, a lot.

Telling people you're a bit deficient in the trouser department is a sure-fire way to have the piss taken out of you for your entire life....
