Metal solenoids cost a hell of a lot more. Add $200+ to your bill if you're having a brass one instead of a plastic one.

The second method is drawing a large copper tube through increasingly smaller holes, stretching it and reducing its diameter until it's the correct size.

In the uk I don't think I've ever seen that first type.

The only non-destructive way I can think of a sprinkler valve failing and firing on its own (more or less) is if a modded valve using a hose connection to a blow gun managed to have the hose come loose from its fittings, releasing the air inside it and triggering the valve.
