Why stainless, just for corrosion resistance? Be worth going to a machinist, I get a few odd bits of 4140 that way. Yeah, I want something that'll never have to be cleaned. Also because I have other stainless parts and was noticing a little galvanic reaction where it contacted the aluminum. Would a...

Hey guys, Have a project going in the background right now and figured I'd ask this here. I was originally trying to use aluminum to fabricate parts. After doing so I'm not really happy with the durability of some of them, so I'd like to make replacements out of stainless. The dimensions of the fla...

Also still here... lurking mostly.

I used to have time and no money. Now I have money and no time. As long as spudfiles remains running I'll still be here, but this in particular isn't a very productive time in my life.

If a gender neutral toy would sell, they would be unbelievably happy to make it! One single product to make and market for boys and girls, it's a manufacturer's dream! The fact though is that it wouldn't sell, because boys and girls are *gasp* different. But... all kids love Log. [youtube]http://ww...

Alumaloy review

Alumaloy/durafix is a pot-metal alloy for soldering material that cannot be joined with normal tin/lead solders. I bought a pound of it a while back and have had a chance to do some test projects recently Metals it will stick to: aluminum zinc copper brass Galvanized(aka zinc plated) steel Physical ...

You could use the spring out of a tape measure to store energy from cranking. Hook one end to your crank and the other to a small step-up gearbox to drive the fan. Add a clutch pin so it only runs when you want it to.

Copper tubing (actual ID .5 inches) is annealed and will harden when you bend it. Copper pipe (type k,l,m) is already work-hardened. I suppose you could calculate the wall thickness difference between straight length of pipe, and a length with a radius bent into it and go from there, but it is unlik...

I agree with D_hall here. Even mentally picturing myself with said pipe, testing to 500 psi, seemed a bit marginal. DYI has developed a more accurate formula for pipe burst pressure, but I'm not sure where it was posted. If you are welding aluminum, always assume the lowest common yield strength. Yo...

First off, look for what Zeus suggested. If you're using it to connect a pilot valve, buy a high-pressure rated length and do not exceed the rating. Hoses are not very dangerous when they burst, but you'll cause the gun to fire if it dumps the pilot volume when bursting. In many cases, metal tubing ...

But my standard analogy to explain how a hybrid works is.... Haha, 'car analogies' are kind of a mocking nerd joke. It's a trope/cliche often brought up, similar to how the media likes to use 'libraries of congress' as a unit of data storage. Though I was only half serious, I will admit this is one...

Humble request: If you end up involved with this production in any significant way, please insist to discovery's editors that they need to stop being so hopelessly vague on technical details. This type of device is simple enough that the average person would be able to understand what the basic numb...

For a 'fun project', might I suggest something like a go-kart instead of a car? To get it running you might only need to remove the fuel line and plumb a flow reg into the intake. Adjust till it doesn't sound ugly or 'knock'. Breaking water down into Hydrogen/oxygen is going to take at least as much...
