You know Maxim(the guy who is credited for making the silencer) also invented the world's first working "heavier than air" aircraft, Take that Wright Bros.

There are many claims for the first powered flight, even before Maxim. I think his biggest claim to fame is the recoil-operated machinegun that was directly responsible for much of the carnage on both sides in the first world war and whose legacy lives on to this day.
