silicone sealing face?

Unread postAuthor: pat123 » Sat Oct 20, 2007 7:55 pm

I got this idea because I can't find anything to seal on my piston. I don't think my lowes or homedepot have neoprene. what if I molded a circular piece of silicone sealant? my understanding is that you want the sealing face on the piston to have as much give as possible to be able to form around the pipe it is sealing on. is this right?

Thanks,
Pat
p.s. this is my first piston so I am a lttile new to this

I really have no idea how to attach it. I tried a screw, but it got ripped off. Maybe using a washer that fits perfectly inside the barrel would help, so that the sealing face woulnd't get ripped off.

why don't you make a section of it and then epoxy that to your piston. Silicone is not very sticky at all, you can peel it right off things but it is a really good gasket material so if you epoxy or glue it onto your piston it should be fine. Maybe someone should try PL Premium. Its this construction grade adhesive and its really really sticky but its sort of flexible, that might make a good sealing face.

I found something that works pretty good. it is a suction cup from one of those basketball hoops you stick to the wall. I had a piece of rubber on the barrel for it to seal against and it got sucked out of the barrel at 20psi so it seals pretty good. if this stops working i will try silicone

thanks

If The rubber comes out the barrel use a bigger washer in front on the piece of rubber on piston. I will give it more support. By increasing the size of the washer on my 1.5" port valve by 3/8" in diameter I was able to crank the pressure up to 115 no problem.

The silicone would work but would wear down over time especially if it is just cast silicone sealant or adhesive. If it doesn't seal try the hint in this thread http://www.spudfiles.com/forums/piston-valve-improvement-t10720.html

This helps the rubber give more and seal the cracks better.
