What's your Holy Grail of Spudguns?

Unread postAuthor: SPG » Tue Jan 01, 2008 6:03 am

I think we all have a Holy Grail we're trying to build or see built. JSR has his continuing search for a BBMG with power and efficiency, I have my semi-automatic BB Hybrid and other people want to lauch VWs into space... They're all things we work towards slowly but surely..

So what's yours, perhaps 2008 will see it finally built.

Portable, powerful, semi-auto golfball cannon that is small and light weight

Maybe next year, or the year after, or the year after that one.
Safe bet of next decade

Oh yeah I have one:

Portable bullpup (bb) sniper rifle:
-At least fire 5 semi rounds at 250~300 fps
-Accurate long barrel with scope
-Piston valve fed on gas from a (liquid) butane container, so no pumping
-Detachable spud launcher beneath the barrel
-Max. length: LESS THAN 2 FEET
-Some realistic gun acc. like charging handles, box-magazine fed, rifling, silencer and I would even like jammings to simulate a real gun as much as possible :D :D Oh only if the shops nearby would sell some decent parts...

EDIT: Hey thanks! :D Now I summed up pretty much all the things I want about a gun and can start focussing on those things, thanks for that! :)

Actually I change mine, golfball/nerf launcher on the bottom, semi/fully automatic paintball luncher on the top.

Yuck, AK-styled assault rifles :D
But I know what you mean; assault rifle with 40mm grenade launcher (in this case a golfball launcher) on bottem, yeeeah I'll add that too! :D totally forgot that!

mine is as follows:
-semi auto GB gun thats compact and powerful (pretty much same as MrCrowley:D)

my other holy grail will never come sadly
-never ending source of high pressure air (like unlimited cheats in gun games)

:D :D :D

for me, its basically building something that looks like a real firearm that people question wether you built it or not.

also, my holy grail is to be able to knock over a soda can from 100 feet consistently.

basically, this means consistent ammo, a rifled barrel, and a crapload of power. oh and a really realy nice scope.

right now, im looking at .40 cal blowgun darts but i dont think it will be able to get the kind of accuracy im looking for.

basically, i need to just go out and buy an airgun. witch i actually just did. so now im cool with that holy grail, although if i had built it i wouldnt have made the whole darn thing out of plastic.

i think right now im looking more towards hammer valve systems. my goal is to make a semi-automatic airsoft sniper rifle that shoots those 6mm airfin projectiles from 400-900 FPS (depending on pressure)

Being able to build SAFE, INEXPENSIVE parts for launchers that will allow the beginning homebuilder to experiment without risking so much in the way of his eyesight, hearing, body parts and life. Sorry that I haven't got there yet guys, but I am trying. I would love to have a pneumatic homebuilders kit to offer for the crazed inventors that are forced to work with questionable materials and systems.

oh, and 3 rounds per second would be nice too. :-p

Semi auto spudgun that can compete with equivalently sized firearms in terms of power (if not accuracy). They will probably never actually equal or exceed firearms' power, but I think they can get a lot closer than they already have.

That, and I want to see a working, supersonic plasma powered launcher in the next decade. :D

A non-cartridge/belt fed, self contained (no air tank), 10x + automatic hybrid that you don't have to "start up"(not a piston/rotary engine).

Once you can do that, nothing separates it from real machine guns other than lower power, which would only come into effect over long ranges or when piercing armor.

A belt fed hybrid would be easy, but making ammo might be annoying after awhile.

A semiauto all metal spudgun... prefferably 1/2" caliber, detachable magazine... marbles or ball bearings as ammo.... operating pressure: 500 psi.... powered by regulated CO2 or HPA.... and a simple reddot sight... yeah that's what I want

@POLAND: that idea sounds pretty easily achievable for a holy grail. Wouldn't be very powerful, but it would certainly be fun to use.

yeah DYI it would be fun... :D
most spudguns here are single shot and they require normally at least 10 - 20 seconds to load and fill - for me a gun that has less power but grater practical rate of fire seems better than a more powerfull but single shot gun...... and you could always use helium or hydrogen to improve performance

As you pointed out before there are certain limitations on pneumatic spudguns and soon we are going to reach them... becasue of this I think that there is going to be a great increase in designs that concentrate on improving rate of fire and practicablity (reducing size, weight, making them less akward to use etc.) in the near future

My Holy Grail is a Semi-Auto piston valved all copper rifle capable of 3 or 4 shots without having to be connected to a constant air source or where I have to wear a backpack for it.

POLAND_SPUD, that would be setting your sights a little low. I built one with a flapper-paddle loading system that worked every now and then. With an improvement on the loading system, (like a blow-forward bolt), you could make one cheap and simply.

My holy grail at the moment is pretty useless. It's to perfect the ignition system for a future hybrid. I want it to provide a continuous spark over a spark strip which stretches the entire 24" length of the chamber. I say this is useless because a BBQ sparker will do the job just as well, (with small spark gaps spread out evenly on the strip), but it's nowhere near as "cool".

I went to my friend's house last night and his dad was working on a coil driver circuit, that he actually completed while I was there. It was pretty damn cool. He hooked it up to a flyback and started running it through the entire frequency range. That flyback was putting out at least 30 Kv. He also had quite an elaborate setup halfway built to drive the coil off of 37 volts DC as well, which included a separate circuit to drive a MOSFET, (30 volt switching). That'll be cool when he gets it done.

But, in the end, I was thinking a simpler design. Just a fixed 555-oscillator, (without the variable resistors and three-way connected to three capacitors to choose from), run to a beefy ignition coil or two wired in parallel. Maybe, if I'm bothered after this, I can run THIS output through another transformer. Who knows....

I guess my ultimate "Non-Useless" holy grail would be coming up with a completely original and revolutionary idea, that no one's even thought up before. Innovation is my ultimate holy grail. Of course, these sort of things don't really come to everybody. Some people are just born to be extremely creative, so I don't know...

EDIT:

That would actually be pretty simple. We've been discussing such a thing in the "mini mortar" thread, although I think they've proved now it's hooked up to a constant air source.

What you would do is hook up a high-pressure chamber, (on the order of around 300 PSIG or so), to a homemade piston valve or a Q.E.V., (if you think it will last long enough for many shots). Then, you have a pilot valve which exhausts only a certain volume of air at a time. One way to do this would be to not have the pilot valve exhaust to the atmosphere, but exhaust into a small expansion chamber. Then, you could vent the expansion chamber, and fire the pilot valve again. Depending on chamber size and pressure, you could get a few shots out of this design.

Of course, if you desired it to be "true" semi auto, you would have to find a way to synchronize your pilot valve and the expansion chamber exhaust valve to work together, so it only takes on operation from you to fire and reseal, and be ready to shoot again.
