That would go well...

Customs: "What is it?"
Me: "Trust me mate, you don't wanna know."

... I don't think.

LOL!  :D Thats going in my sig.

Your so lucky rag! Maybe you could ask him to ship it with two different barrels? With a little printout on how it doubles as a "scatter gun" as well?

Or maybe not, the Home Office doesn't take too kindly to devices than can be "readily converted"...

Me, lucky? Depends on the situation.
Personal injury - bad luck with receiving it, good luck with surviving it.
Dice rolling - generally about average... except sometimes, when probability goes and takes a long drag on the ol' pipe, then decides: "Bollocks to this, I'm bored, what would be most awesome?".

One game of Warhammer 40,000 I played against my brother, his entire army opened fire on a single one of my squads which had annoyed him, dice flying everywhere.
Smoke clears, not one of my models has even taken a scratch. The chances of me passing all the armour saves I had to make? About one in two and a quarter million, but I did it anyway.
:D

@Jonnyboy: I was considering a "convenient printout" with "helpful diagrams" as a plan.
And it may be "lucky", but it's not going to be a free ride - I've got a lot of assessment and suggestion to do - and a heap of collaborative work between me, Solar and the other tester.

Doesn't mean it's not going to be awesome though.

EDIT: Depends on what two different barrels means. There are no arguments with having interchangeable barrels of different lengths on paintball guns, but JSR makes the point that it might not be the best possible option...

When it's shipped it should try to be as much of a consumer product as possible. Include some warranty stuff, instructions and some paint. I take back my barrel idea customs might get a little suspicious when it comes with a barrel that can't be attached to the gun.

I'd label it as a toy foamball gun or maybe even a supersoaker.
The one checking your package probably isnt an engineer and will not realize that a kids toy will never need a precisely machined metal construction.

Maybe paint it in some fancy colors. Pink perhaps. :D

Highly unlikely, as an obvious high-pressure airgun it will probably be tested in a police ballistic lab.

Absolutely excellent suggestion there. That's the kind of suggestion I was hoping for when I started this thread.

I don't know exactly what Solar supplies normally, but creating and adding a convincing instruction manual, warranty form, tech support/trouble shooting sheet shouldn't be any great effort, and will add a huge weight of credibility.

@psycix: I'd rather not lie like that, because it's blatantly not going to cut any ice with customs, and a blatant and deliberate deception like that will only cause trouble - and prevent me from trying to play the "paintball gun exemption" card.

Ship it with a barrel insert to lower the diameter and throw in a bag of paintballs with it.

Again, unlikely to get the exemption I'll need.

Also, I do plan to actually test this for proper in a paintball game if I can. Having a garish launcher would be less than practical for that.

Please, no more suggestions about painting the launcher in bright colours or putting flowers down the side.

This thread outlines PRECISELY why I will never move to the UK. Even with our US equivalent to 'Section 5', Class 3 (Full Auto, Suppressed, and I think explosives...), we can still apply for permits to use almost anything. Heck, I'm pretty sure that I could have combustions here in Texas if I had them registered as firearms, which I already have plenty of. I want a suppressor so bad... I fired a Sig 556 with a can on it once, it wasn't 'quiet' by any means, but it sure as hell didn't need to be used with ear protection. It sounded more like an over pressured paintball gun than anything. More of a loud 'slap' than a 'CRACK'.

Oh yeah, I forgot to mention that Section 5 also includes semi-autos/pump actions with a rifled barrel, except .22 rimfire - and arguably lower powered air rifles, because this quote was recently dug up on the CPS website:

The Home Office regard self-loading or pump action rifled airguns as outside the scope of the Firearms Act, unless they are sufficiently powerful to fall within the category of a "specially dangerous" air weapon.

These are very picky guys. Now, I've used more firearms than most of the public has (5.56, .22 and 12g) by virtue of having been in the Army Cadets, but even then, I've never fired a semi, excepting use of paintball/airsoft guns.
Basically, everything has to be bolt or lever action - or like my TX air rifle, breech loaded.
About the only thing the UK is less fussy about than the US is suppressors, which require no licence - although they also insist that it has to be picked up in person from a dealer, no internet transactions.

Of course, this only really applies if you're hugely fussy about powder burning firearms, which to be honest, I'm not. My TX200 is fine for paper punching and vermin control, and if I want power, I can build it. So far, I've not had to have both lots of power and pin-point accuracy at the same time - although I am working on a spudding project intended to do just that, but it's far from essential.

@john bunsenburner: No, not at all possible. Several months to clear, money, required gun safe, has an expiry date, a good reason needed... and I doubt they would consider "Paintball" good enough.

Basically, it's not viable for so many reasons, not least a silly amount of money.
And admitting a requirement for a Section 1 licence would require it to be shipped to a firearms dealer, because anything that's legally considered a firearm cannot be shipped direct.
