They are installed on sealed points of movement that need to be greased such as a car u-joint. When you want to grease the part a grease gun is attached to the nipple and you pump the joint full of grease.

they are check valves, however they are made for highly viscous fluids such as grease or oil... they make similar fittings for gases.. they're alittle pricier due to the extra precision needed to seal gases...

What gases and pressures are you working with? I'm guessing something to do with a mini if you are trying to work with small check valve's like grease fittings.

Combustion Monkey hit the nail on the head, "Zerk" fittings used to inject grease into cross bearings and pivot points on machinery and automotive applications.

I am using air and i am building a two stage pump to reach max pressures of 50bar, the pump will be driven by a small electric motor and will be fed from a 10bar compressor. Maybe i should just build a check valve seeing as it is fairly complicated to get anythign over 10mm here. Advice appriciated.

At the bottom of the piston tube which will be sealed with a blob of molten lead.
