Digital Camera Users Beware

Unread postAuthor: rcman50166 » Thu Feb 26, 2009 1:33 am

Hey all. It's been a while since I have posted and this topic may be a bit of a stretch as far as relevance goes but I'll give it a try.

We all use cameras when we take pictures of our spud guns. Most of us have stepped into the world of digital cameras by now. But if you are planning to get a new camera beware. I have a lesson I need to teach you guys.

I tried to buy a new camera cause my Nikon broke. (Some piece of the shutter broke off and its time for the trash) So I go browsing on the internet and find the camera I want. It is a Canon PowerShot SX10IS. 10 Mega Pixels and 20x optical zoom. Very nice. So the camera usually goes for $330 here in the U.S. But I thought I found a killer deals on another site. http://www.everyprice.com/ They had links to other sites that sold my camera for ridiculously low prices. I went for a site called http://www.stopandshopdigital.com and found my camera for $265. So it seemed like a no brainer to order. Strangely upon checkout they asked for my bank number. A little hesitant I looked it up and wrote it down. After that I placed my order with next day air shipping. About a day later I get an e-mail from the site asking for me to call in to confirm my order. So I called and they asked me my order number and I willingly gave them it. Then they asked if I wanted to add some sort of super rechargable battery to the order to $90. I declined the offer and thought nothing of it. They said they would put the order into the shipping department and that was it. The phone call ended and I went about my day. The next day I checked the website and saw my order had been put on backorder. So a little confused I decided to see the site ratings on google. They were not pretty. http://thoughts-of-dave.blogspot.com/2009/01/beware-of-stop-and-shop-digital-aka.htmlThis site in particular told me everything I needed to know. It turns out I have bought a camera from a bait and switch scam website. For those of you who don't know, a bait and switch site is a site where they will try to persuade you to add stuff to your order that you don't need. Since I declined the batteries, they put my order on backorder, indefinitely. :x I got screwed badly and it is a cautionary tale to prevent you from doing the same.

Here I have other sites to avoid. If you know of any others please post and let me know.

Currently I have made calls to my bank saying they cant do anything until the payment goes through. Then I have to file a fraud report. I have decided to take matters into my own hands as well. I will be cutting off the accessories they profit off of to shut them down.

A lesson learned for sure. It almost always pays to stick to reputable vendors for stuff like this. Electronics in particular are highly susceptible to this sort of scamming. If the price is a little too low to be believed, beware.

BTW, I have found Costco to carry a decent selection of digital cameras and usually at extremely competitive prices.

That bloody stinks...

I really try to buy stuff in person, or over the internet from a nearby store (within a couple hundred k's).

And as a rule (except for ebay etc or whatever) I usually only buy from physical shops, eg. ones you could go there and walk into..

Far out, sucks for you..

Wow, these sites look pretty legit too, thanks for the heads-up.

Also, be sure to check out our new sponsor, selling a fuel metering system for the low, low price of $179.99 :D

(In his defense, it looks like a pretty fancy one.)
