Legal issues in SG: What to and what not to do

Unread postAuthor: limbeh » Tue Aug 11, 2009 10:58 am

Hope this is possible to add into the spudwiki.

To all SG ppl entering spudding, this is your guide what to and what not to do, paid for with the sweat of those who have gone before you. Follow these guidelines, don't play play and you will be fine.

1. Not everything that is legal in the other countries is legal here.

2. When in doubt over the legality of doing something, don't do it.

3. Combustion and hybrid cannons are explicitly banned under the Firearms and Explosives Act. Don't even try building them[b\]. As for pneumatics, this is a grey area, so act with caution.

4. [b]Where possible, keep your guns small.[b\] Big guns naturally make people suspicious, plus it's not as if we have much space to fire anyway.

5. [b]Restrict the destructive power of your guns.
Having something obviously powerful enough to kill naturally makes people suspicious of us, and that is what we don't need. You want something powerful, go join air rifle, gun club, or wait for NS.

6. Be sensitive to the people around you, ie your neighbours and such. Don't piss them off, simply because angry people are more inclined to call hell on us. Besides, we want a reputation for being responsible hobbyists, not obnoxious snobs or screwed up weirdos.

7. Do NOT post where and how you get your materials or disclose them to unidentified people - people who we haven't verified. PM me first to check the person out. This it to make it difficult for trouble makers.

Here in SG the difficulty is not in finding the knowledge, but in getting the materials needed. Although its impossible to prevent a sufficiently determined trouble maker from reinventing the wheel, the idea is to make it sufficiently troublesome so that they won't bother using spudguns and instead try something else.

8. Do not reveal your identity to unidentified people. Unwanted attention, particularly from kaypohs, is never good.

9. There is a limit to how much you can DIY. Some things, like welding, are better left to professionals with the equipment.[b\] Better to pay a little rather than try to reinvent the wheel and risk your life, its not as if labour costs very much here either.

[b]So don't play play or else high chance that you will kena pay and pay.

Welcome to Singapore.

The laws are stricter concerning spudguns than anywhere in the West.

Even the Aussies for all they complain have it good compared to us.

This may be a good guide for your country, but not the USA or even other countries.

For that reason this will not be stickied by me.

Here in the USA different states have different laws pertaining to the same issue's. Sometimes the laws can very from city to city with in the same state. That is why this isn't good for the USA.

7. Do NOT post where and how you get your materials or disclose them to unidentified people - people who we haven't verified. PM me first to check the person out. This it to make it difficult for trouble makers.

What makes you think you know who is OK and who isn't? Do you know everybody here personally?

Errr... Your not necessarily wrong, but you haven't really came back to the box with any new "boxy" ideas. Sounds more like you explored your on brain/ mentality and wrote something down.

There is a difference between what people actually consider, and the playful skipping of what you think people think. Try adding: "I live on a small ass island, so..." to each of your rules. Or perhaps that is what you should be aware of in the first place?

I have to agree with the Moderators.

While it's justified to have a stickied page for general US spudgun law, because about 2/3rds of our members are American, we cannot justify a separate sticky page for each possible country or state. We'd use up the whole front forum page for just legal advice...

Of course, if you would like, I can help you turn this into a Spudwiki page, where it would have a valid home.

Good idea, many of these points apply to most countries were spudguns are in a legal grey area.

Still though if i happened to live in singapore, you said dont trust anyone unless you check them out. How would i know to trust you? Also if you want to shoot your guns, just go out to the china country side.

Mod/admin please help me sticky thanks

Never request anything to be stickied. Read the rules.

As for your actual article, as the other mods have said, fairly pointless for Spudfiles. We just don't sticky anything, but you can put it in the Wiki like Ragnarok suggested. It does seem like it's just random collective thoughts of yours as well, some quite obvious and some are quite pointless and I doubt people will even take notice.

In short, you can't just jot some ideas of yours down and ask for it to be stickied. Go look at some other stickys, they're very detailed and thoughtout with vast amounts of information that help many members.

What you should do is generalise the list so its not only for SG, clean it up a bit in the writing and format and review some of the points, because most of them are quite pointless.

MrCrowley / jrrdw: My bad. Edited request.

To most of the other posters: Some things can be added (e.g. interpretation of local law) and a lot of things can be more detailed but I decided to keep it simple as most of the people entering here are 13-15 and usually don't have the patience to read through something this long. Hence the brief entry. Should I add another entry with the details?

Although this sounds like an exploration of the mind, new SG people spam me with questions because I'm the only guy who can be recognised as a SG person.

Also, not to long ago someone got arrested here for possession of an almuninium spudgun, plus closer to me someone destructive tried to get his hands on one - destructive as in has previously blown up several laboratories and caused quite some damage.

I have to agree with that...

I don't understand some of libmeh suggestions:
point 6 seems ok to me
but point 7 is really strange... you won't stop people from buying pipes and fittings... most of stuff needed to build 99% of guns on spudfiles can be bought at any hardware shop/plumbing supply/etc.

also keep in mind that for criminals spudguns are of little value - guns are relatively easy to obtain even if they are forbidden... if they have problems with acquiring them they can always produce them at any machine shop

rather than adding a page for each country you should start a new thread aiming at creating a set of universal guidelines how to keep low profile...

if no one knows you have something illegal there is no one to call the cops
