Spudding Preference Survey

Unread postAuthor: DYI » Mon May 24, 2010 3:07 pm

I will be creating an animation, a game, and two (simple) applications for an upcoming programming project. I need a target audience in some sort of hobbyist group, and you're it. Only responses to the survey are allowed in this thread, but there's no problem with attaching extra comments to your response if you'd like.

1.What kind of new (simple) applications could the community benefit most from?
Select Two.

-Adiabatic compression calculator
-Speed of sound calculator (for any gas or mixture of gases and any
temperature, within reason.
-Universal fueling calculator (including several fuel/oxidizer and buffer
gas combinations)
-Ballistic efficiency calculator (based on initial conditions and
GGDT/HGDT output)
-Muzzle speed based on hang time (where gravity, air pressure, Cd, and
other such annoyances can be assumed to be constant)

2. Which stage of a launcher's life do you most enjoy?
a)Idle theorizing
b)Design
c)Construction
d)Testing
e)Normal use
f)Bragging on Spudfiles about it

3.How much do you research and apply physics in areas relevant to this hobby?
Pick one.

a)Never
b)Rarely
c)When necessary
d)Moderately
e)Every build is heavily optimized and simulated before I buy materials
f)I theorize and calculate more than I build and test
g)I've never actually built anything, my work is entirely theoretical

4. To what degree do you value aesthetics in a build?

a)Function follows form
b)Depends on the builds
c)After it works, I make it pretty
d)Occasionally make some effort at improving appearance
e)If I built it and it looks good, it wasn't on purpose

5. On a scale of one to ten (one being lowest), how interested are you in achieving high kinetic energy?

6. On a scale of one to ten, how interested are you in achieving high speeds?

7. On a scale of one to ten, how interested are you in improving accuracy?

8. To what degree do you strive for innovation?

a) It's all I do.
b) Most of my builds are innovative
c) Moderately
d) Only when some other design criterion demands it
e) Rarely/never
f) wut? i jst wont bo0m

9. What would you like to see included on a new site developed by yours truly?

What if we had a buy/sell/trade oriented site for spudgun related items. We could have a thread on this site where you advertise your trades/items for sale.

That probably wouldn't work well because everybody on this site is from different places. I live relatively close to boyntonstu, but having one person to trade with ain't that great. You could pay for shipping and all but it would end up being more than some of the things you're buying.

Thank you all for the speedy responses. Considering the answers to question 6, it's amazing that my High Velocity Launch thread has turned into a two-party discussion

I'll start the next stage of the project tomorrow after school, and will accept survey responses until then.

Some of us are realists
Just kidding :D

I believe your 'high speed' is several mach whereas ours probably tops out at mach 1.5. Then again, I interpreted that question in different ways. For example, on a pneumatic PVC golfball gun, 200m/s is pretty fast and I would build the cannon trying to get higher velocity than higher energy (which would be a 3" barreld PVC cannon shooting soup cans I imagine).

So generally I build cannons with velocity and not energy in mind. Though the other part of your question is how far you would go solely for high velocity, I think my 8 still stands as I built a hybrid pretty much for that reason.

I'll take time to make a full list later.

The tool i would like to see ( but not many would need it ) would be a light gas gun calculator for an air driven piston. This would take into consideration a GGDT type tool that would calculate energy transfer of say a piston in a 3 inch barrel 6 feet long that is used to compress and heat air in front of the piston to create a high pressure high temperature springer to launch a golf ball out a secondary barrel as sonic or supersonic speeds. (goal clearly supersonic speeds)

Ideally the balance where the highest energy transfer from a large diameter heaver piston to a smaller ligher projectile could be found. The goal is to find the mass needed for the piston to efficiently safely stop and not rebound, while giving all the KE to the lighter projectile, thus imparting higher velocity than is possible with just the primary cannon.

The tool would be used to adjust the piston mass, find the initial chamber size and pressure required, adjust the secondary (final) barrel length needed with and without a burst disk (springer or burst disk), etc.

I imagine this won't be too popular, but then again, who knew that advanced hybrids would take off with the community?
