Using CAD software (CoCreate Modeling Personal Edition)

Unread postAuthor: Metalcookie » Mon Jul 26, 2010 10:42 pm

Hey guys. Been planning on making another spud gun, but I wanted to use CAD software to plan it. does anyone use this particular software? I've been experimenting with it and I'm really starting to like it. Are there any other recommendations for easier software other than Google sketch up?

Ive used 3 cad programs as an amateur designer; solidworks, sketchup, and autodesk inventor. I think they all have their merits, sketchup is free and easy to get started in, but it can be imprecise and difficult to make complicated things. I dont have as much expirience with solidworks but it can be very precise and good for complicated drawings, but you need a little more knowledge to use it effectively. Solidworks is my favorite so far, its has good precision yet is very easy to get started in, ofcourse it does cost a fair amount like solidworks.

As far as those three go I dont think you can go wrong with a design program, they all make visualizing your ideas, and making your assembly drawings. However I sometimes still prefer a good old pencil and straight edge, and I think its an important skill to have.

Patience is a virtue, get it if you can, seldom in a women, never in a man.

I use inventor and occasionally Algor FEA. Combined, they probably cost at least $15,000, but they give free licenses to students to hook them early so they buy it later. Kinda like getting free drugs.
