Hose pressure cannon

Unread postAuthor: sireinstein » Fri Jun 09, 2006 11:41 am

I was bored about six months ago and decided to experiment with a cannon using pressure from a garden hose. I made this cannon in about 5 minutes and it was able to shoot a marble about 200ft in a straight path. The design is very simple and requires duck tape (to seal the hose to the pvc pipe), pvc pipe, a badmitten birdie and some type of projectile.hope you try and tell me how it worked. This is my original design and am planing on making one without having to use duck tape but instead some kind screw piece for the hose. i was very pleased with the results especially considering it took me about 15 min to design the whole thing! The purpose of this post is to show that you can make something with good power with almost no supplies or time.

Construction
1. Find a badmitten birdie and take off the rubber front piece( make sure the front piece is a bowl shaped otherwise it will not fit properely in the tube.

2. Find a pvc pipe that the birdie tip fits very tight( it should be impossible to push in without a strong stick)

3.attach the hose to the pvc pipe using duck tape( there may be better options for sealing the hose but this is what i did)

4. make sure you use plenty of duck tape, remember the duck tape has to seal the water pressure. It took me about 4 minutes to tape it.

Usage
5.Now simply stick the birdie about 1 ft into the pipe using a sturdy stick.

6.Then place a marble or some other projectile infront of the birdie.

7. Within 20 seconds it should fire creating a suprizingly loud noize and a kick back.

8.turn the water off as fast as possible to avoid soaking the tape.

Missfires
1. take the long stick and push hard against the badmitten piece. The piece should then launch out of the tube. Be careful not to hold the stick to tight because the stick goes flying as well.

hope you try and tell me how it worked. This is my original design and am planing on making one without having to use duck tape but instead some kind screw piece for the hose. i was very pleased with the results especially considering it took me about 15 min to design the whole thing!

I think it is not possible ... the pressure in a hose is not big enought to shoot a marble 200 ft ...

And add some money and you have a most powerful cannon ...

You can dought it but its true when the badmitten piece leaves the tube it creates a reflex type action firing the marble at least that far. Youd be supprized by what a hose can do.

The canon isnt amazing looking its just a pvc pipe connected to a hose using duck tape ,but to be honest the first time i fired it i questiond it ability. Foolishly i aimed it in the direction of out nighbors house accross the street and three doors down and it shot right over their new van (only missed by about 1 ft.) I am dead surious that it can fire a marble 200ft in a straight path. It works because the badmitten piece is under alot of pressure so it is slowly pushed out of the barrel. When it suddenly is free of the barrel it is traveling at such high speed becasue the pressure anything placed infront(marble) travels as fast or faster. Because the marble is areodynamic and sturdy it will fire extremely far. I am only 13 but really enjoy projects like this. Making a canon that actually is effective out of nothing really is exciting.

If I can hold the water in the hose with my thumb, I doubt it has a lot of power. Maybe your telling the truth maybe your not, frankly it doesn't matter. put some thought into this idea for maybe a water pressurized PVC gun with a valve.

no doubt a hose doesnt have that much presure but it isnt the amount of pressure generating the most amount of force it is the front birdie piece and the action it makes as it leaves the barrel. For some reason the velocity is extremely high.

Considering that sireinstein has neibors within 200', he probably has city water, which is delivered at ~50 psi.

My personal hypothesis is that, because the static friction of most materials is higher than the dynamic friction, the badmitton ball is accting somewhat like a burst disk; it's allowing the pressure to build up significantly, at which point it slips and using the slight amount of energy stored in the hose, accelerates along with the projectile.
