PSI V. DISTANCE

Unread postAuthor: bhlabrie » Sun Mar 27, 2011 7:36 am

MORNING GUYS,

I AM NEW TO THE FORUMS SO PLEASE FORGIVE ME AS I AM SURE THIS QUESTION HAS BEEN COVERED BEFORE:

I HAVE NOTICED THAT WHEN SHOOTING MY CANNON, THERE ARE POINTS WHERE HIGHER PSI DOSEN'T ALWAYS HELP WITH OVERALL DISTANCE.

RECENTLY I SHOT AT 50 PSI AND THEN AT 100 PSI AND ONLY GOT A FEW MORE FEET OUT OF THE LAUNCH. IS THERE AN OPTIMUM PSI? IS TOO MUCH PSI COUNTER PRODUCTIVE?

IS THERE A GOOD EXPLANITION OR MAYBE A LINK YOU CAN HELP ME WITH?

THANKS IN ADVANCE

HAVE YOU TRIED SHOUTING AT YOUR LAUNCHER?

:D

There are certainly cases where more pressure can result in less power, such as with hammer valves that have a "sweet spot" where maximum power comes at a certain psi and increasing pressure reduces power after that point.

Could you supply a big more details about your launcher and the type of ammunition you're using?

The type of projectile does make a huge difference in range. I found that shooting soft stuff like rolled up t shirts and such seem to gain very little after a pressure is reached. Solid hard objects such as golf balls tend to go further with pressure up to a point of diminishing returns as the launches approach SOS.

Some valve types tend to choke themselves as they reach sonic flow and higher pressure has marginal improvements in flow as the effective orifice shrinks with higher pressure.
