Innovation?

Unread postAuthor: kydavies » Sat May 12, 2012 12:27 pm

Is it just me or has nothing really innovative been posted lately? This lull is driving me and possibly others crazy. That being said, spudders, get your s*** together and build outside the box.

Also for those who are going to tell me that im being a Hippocrate because I haven't posted anything outside my comfort zone in a while I have a sexy coaxial that will be up in a few days when I'm over my "piston performance issues" (more lube) XD.

Rock On,

I would, but my design is expensive and complicated and if it doesn't work, then I am stuck with a really heavy, expensive door stop. Not worth the risk right now and theres no point in going for anything less, so I wait. Besides, I shoot my spud gun rarely as it is, and the cannon that I do have that actually works is already so good that in order to make any new cannon be so much better as to actually be worth it is a tall order for me. So I will wait until I have at least $1,000.00 to burn because it won't cost a penny less than that i'm damn certain.
Being married with a 1.5 year old kid doesn't help spudding matters either. "Oh honey, by the way, we can put off buying a house for another month because I wanted to shoot limes 200fps faster than I already can". What would she say? "Oh, thats lovely dear"?

Other than that, I don't have any excuses and am rather anxious to get the shop running again.

ohhh thats insulting :P thought I did well to go outside the box and manufacture a gun with the capability of shooting more then once, without operating a shock pump or compressor to fill the tank.
Challenge accepted, I will post a vid of the devastation and finally put up a showcase of my combustion golf ball cannon (metred propane)

Might have to start again and manufacture a Pneumatic semi auto marble cannon , or mayb double barrelled golball combustion, shotgun style :P

If she did then you would have found yourself a keeper :D

This hobby, at least as represented by this forum, has come a long way in the past 5 years since I joined, but to expect radical innovation over days and weeks is a little unrealistic, especially as for most people it's something they do in their free time.

weakipedia wrote:The word hypocrisy comes from the Greek ὑπόκρισις (hypokrisis), which means "Jealous" "play-acting", "acting out", "coward" or "dissembling".[3] The word hypocrite is from the Greek word ὑποκρίτης (hypokrites), the agentive noun associated with υποκρίνομαι (hypokrinomai κρίση, "judgment" »κριτική (kritiki), "critics") presumably because the performance of a dramatic text by an actor was to involve a degree of interpretation, or assessment.

Alternatively, the word is an amalgam of the Greek prefix hypo-, meaning "under", and the verb krinein, meaning "to sift or decide". Thus the original meaning implied a deficiency in the ability to sift or decide. This deficiency, as it pertains to one's own beliefs and feelings, informs the word's contemporary meaning.[4]

Whereas hypokrisis applied to any sort of public performance (including the art of rhetoric), hypokrites was a technical term for a stage actor and was not considered an appropriate role for a public figure. In Athens in the 4th century BC, for example, the great orator Demosthenes ridiculed his rival Aeschines, who had been a successful actor before taking up politics, as a hypokrites whose skill at impersonating characters on stage made him an untrustworthy politician. This negative view of the hypokrites, perhaps combined with the Roman disdain for actors, later shaded into the originally neutral hypokrisis. It is this later sense of hypokrisis as "play-acting", i.e., the assumption of a counterfeit persona, that gives the modern word hypocrisy its negative connotation.

No wonder there's no innovation :D

Well....it could be just you. Considering that the guys here do the best they can with what they have, I think they do a pretty good job.

Innovation, huh?

Lately I've found myself facing a terrible dilemma:

A multitude of fascinating [innovative?] ideas have been floating around in my head for months. But the moment I set down to make one of them a reality, a newer, more interesting one either outdoes it or completely replaces it. It pains me to invest time and money into something when I know that a better or more interesting approach/idea will emerge shortly after.

Then there's the issue of me not WANTING to build things. Once I establish the design and plan of action in my head, the actual process of building it seems laborious and monotonous. These days I spend more time thinking than tinkering because the former just seems so much more fun.

So as for innovation, at least in my case, I think it's as strong as ever. It's just that building things has gone down a few spaces on my list of priorities.

Im still new to the forum in my opinion. There really isnt too many people joining the forum and and actually building anything PERIOD!! However to stick up for the older members, they have done, in my opinion, above and beyond as far as building goes. I go through the random cannons everyday, and everyday, I find something new I'd like to try and I learn something new. So, to the elder members, THANK YOU!!!!! :D

As the largest spud community on the internet, we humbly apologize that the level of ingenuity and innovation does not meet your standards, we hope to rectify the lull immediately by releasing the secret stash of perfect supdgun plans that are stored deep within the vaults.

Sarcasm aside, have you seen the amazing works of engineering and science produced on this website? I believe this site offers enough examples of innovative launchers to satisfy most people's wish to fling stuff very far and fast in order to damage or destroy a target. But if all of the physical examples can not meet your criteria for "innovation," there are hundreds of unbuilt plans and concepts laying around these forums just asking to be tested.

I understand that in the scope of spudgun advancements, recently there has been a lull, but this is a fairly limited hobby, and it does have limits to what it can achieve before turning to conventional propellent (magic powder, HE, etc.) There's probably always room for innovation, but to ask others to be innovative without bringing any physical proof of innovation on your part to the table, it's ridiculous. You can say you're not being hippocritical, but that doesn't change the fact that in the instance you are.

This is nothing personal, it's just misguided posts like this really irk me, and I'd like to get my point across.
