na go even simpler , ball valve pnuematic... all u need is 2 different sized pipes and a couple of fittings...

yet it's not as simple.

you could even try a pill bottle gun too! that would be simple, you could make it in 10 minutes and fire it immediately instead of waiting 24 hours for pvc glues to cure.

pill bottle ammo wouldn't go as far and you would be able to record distances in terms of measurement that people are familiar with so that yout project is easy to understand yet creative.

that's the way i would go, and if get good at making pill bottle guns, u could sell them at school and make a little cash!

you could turn your project into an infomercial!

What exactly is your assignment? Trajectories? Build the smallest pneumatic you can, that would be fun and easy to use.

One of the smallest cannons on here...

i really think you should go pnuematic... what happens if the gun wont fire because u get the fuel wrong? or the ignition source breaks? or worst case scenario in a pill bottle gun, the lid of the pill bottle shoots off at someone say... your teacher?

I definately wouldn't make a pill bottle gun, they don't work consistantly enough to use as a science project and wont work when you need them...

I'd also make a pnuematic if I was you, it's $6 for a PVC Glue\PVC primer set, $2.25 for a schrader valve (tank valve, tire valve), $3 for 10 foot of 1" PVC, $5 for a 1" ball valve, and about $4.50 for (2) 1" Male adapters, (2) 1" 90's, and a 1" cap

I had a giant description wrote of how to make it, but to be more simple I just drew this up for you...

<img src="http://img106.imageshack.us/img106/1900/simplepneumatic2bl.png">

It should be very cheap to make, just make sure you use primer and then glue... Read the directions on the PVC primer and glue if you haven't used them before...

And for using a Tire Valve (pop-in schrader) in goes in the end cap, and when you use a Tank valve (threaded schrader, better) you can drill a 3/8" hole, thread in the fitting using a 7/16 wrench while pushing straight down on the valve, thread almost completely in, then take out the fitting, wrap it in 3 wraps of teflon tape (PTFE thread seal tape) and put it back in...

Just close the ball valve (make the handle perpendicular to the chamber), fill the gun up with air via schrader valve using a bike pump with a gauge or a air compressor with regulated output because the gun doesn't have a gauge you can't go much over 100 psi so don't use like an unregulated 200psi compressor...

You can get the pipe, fittings, glue, and ball valve at Home-Depot, but I'm not sure where to get a Schrader... I always buy mine from McMaster.com part number 8063K41 or 6281T13

Wait 24 hours for primer\glue to cure, the chamber length should be about 2' of 1" and the barrel should be about 2' of 3' of 1".... Potatoe's, tape-wrapped "C" cell batterys, and other vegetables shoot of of 1" barrels great...

why do you want it to be so simple if you have a hole 9 week to do it, i made my combustion in less than an hour you can check it out here http://home.comcast.net/~irwinner/potato.html and you dont need an air compressor or any thing just a bottle of axe and you good to go.

He said it had to be simple ya idiot, and to get bbq ignitors to work every time, is not gonna be fun for a first gun. I still havent gotten them to work i use lantern sparkers (im also an idiot tho). With a pnuematic he can go much simpler, save money, and guaruntee a shot. Also pnuematics are stronger...so...

I wouldn't be proud for making a combustion in less than an out, I made my ABS one in less than 5 minutes, and I made my friends PVC on in like a half-hour and it's complex, over-under, solvent welded cam-lock, and a 1.5" through the cam-lock for breach loading...

Definately make a pneumatic like I gave you the diagram for....

It's probably only goings to cost $15 for the parts and $6 for the glue\primer if you don't have any yet.... Basic combustions cost $16 for just the 3" pipe, and then more for the 3" cleanout, the 3" to 1.5" adapter, and the 1.5" pipe is about $7

Make sure you buy all NSF-PW pipe and fittings, DON'T get cellular core pipe, you WILL get hurt if you fill it up with compressed air...

NSF-PW Solid Core 1" PVC, it's probably rated to 450psi at 73 F... also make sure the 90's and the 1" PVC ball valve are NSF-PW... it doesn't really matter if the 1" males are NSF-PW, but it doesn't cost any more for them to be NSF-PW....

Your Parts list:

Damn I love excel :D
