Exploding barrel

Unread postAuthor: rna_duelers » Fri Jul 07, 2006 6:49 pm

I was using my cannon the other day with a 1" barrel and i put a small sabot of spud down my barrel followed by about 6 marbles for a shot gun but when i fired the cannon my barrel just flew apart about 20cm from my sprinkler valve and the pipe was pressure rated to 200psi and i shot only at 120psi and i wonder if this has ever happend to any one else?I think maybe all the marbles maybe got wedged against each other and decided to exit the side of the barrel instead of the end but im not sure just wondering if any one could tell me why this happend.

I don't think that the marbles are to blame. It might of to do with some other factor(s).

Was it cold outside?

Did you leave your cannon out in sun?

Was the barrel damaged in any way?

What do you normally fire from the cannon?

Did you ever expose the barrel to any chemical(s)?

It was cold outside and the pipe i used was Australian class 12 pipe peak burst pressure is 580psi thats burst pressure, but it was cold that day that must have played a major factor in it it was about 17 degrees centigrade (62 F) so i guess it was the cold because it wasnt exposed to chemicals but i also had fired it 3 times previously that day with no problems.

a big chunk of the barrel flew off? that's interesting. i've heard of barrel blowing out of their glued joints when the ammo is too heavy but not this.

Could be a manufacturing problem? micrscopic stress fractures in the pipe? idk, but this is interesting.

was your barrel so long that is bended when you were holding it horizontally?

otherwise if 1" pvc should be rated to... idk 440 psi i think?
Spudstuff is dead on if that's the case.

You might have dropped it and it cracked.

When i get my camrea off my mum i will post some pics of it there is one large chunk and a small one and the rest is 2 ends of the pipe it was ripped in half by the force. But it was low energy transfer from the compressed gas to the pvc.

62*F isn't cold at all.

We have heard of such barrel breakage before, shooting saboted gravel.
Navigator7 (who pumps concrete, including gravel, for a living) weighed in, saying that gravel has a tendancy to get stuck in the tubing, and that that is probably what caused the break.

Now, marbles wouldn't be as well suited for causing such clogs as gravel, but they might do it.

It had to be a maf defect. The marbles palyed a role too I think, if the pipe was messed up and it was brittle and the marbles did get stuck both factors together and that is how you barrel blow up. Member Lucky13's hybrid the SCH80 union blow when it was at 80psi. I think that is what happened here. I might be wrong tho.
