Pneumatic Shell

Unread postAuthor: Atlantis » Sun Jan 21, 2007 10:05 pm

I know this idea has been tossed around for quite abit but I may have found a practical solution. I have recently been inspired by a triggered burst disk design which is also used in this concept.

The yellow is the burst disk.
The red is a flap of rubber with a spike on it.

The gun would have a bolt which would hit the back of the shell pushing the spike into the burst disk releasing the air.

Seems like it could work. Make sure the spike is sharp :salute:

Interesting design,

I see a few problems:
One, the case would have to be huge to allow for a big enough chamber to shoot, after all the case is the chamber.
Two, when the firing pin slams the back forward not only will the hammer spring have to be strong enough to blow the disk, it’ll have to do that with around 100psi of force acting against it.

Now here are some suggestions:
One, instead of the hole back of the case move forward, just have a small tube in the middle of the case from the back to the burst disk sealed off as best as possible form the pressure, inside the tube have a small sharp pin that runs the length of the tube, the firing pin in the bolt hits the pin in the case slamming it forward into and rupturing the burst disk there by firing the gun.
Two, you may want to consider electric “ignition”, have small gauge wire crisscrossing the burst disk, run an electric current through the wire and it’ll burn though the burst disk firing the gun.
Three, use a model rocket engine igniter to rupture the burst disk.

why, oh why, is it that I never receive any credit? I mean I’m the one that came up with the idea for cased ammo with the propellant in side, ok I’m the one who improved upon the original design that was shrugged off by its original creator because it was a little over his/her head.

Call me "Judge", it's easier to type.

I drew this up right before I went to bed so it's pretty rough, didn't work out the details. Making the pin smaller would make it easier to move the pin.
