Cl gas? Cannon freak, using NaCl in an electrolysis machine will do nothing more than give you Cl- ions, not deadly gas.
(And increase conductivity, etc)

Ammosmoke, do you know anything about ANYTHING?

Stun guns should not be used, but that's because they cannot handle extended use and because its low current capacity is very low. 2-3 amperes is not its draw. By the way, it takes a mere 20 milliamps to kill a human if you get them across the heart.

Just because something is high current, it doesn't mean it will blow up. The current will be the same whether you use 8 AAAs or one 12v gell cell. The water is at a fixed resistance which you can not change. The only thing that is different between the two power sources is that they will have different times at which they will die. V=IR; Voltage = Current x Resistance. You CAN NOT change that.

Next, the gasses would never explode. Do you know what would happen? Tiny little combustions would happen in the form of a fizz.

Also, about the electrolyte, does it matter what he uses if he is just collecting the hydrogen? No.

Ok, I said stunguns should NOT be used. And, I was thinking of a different setup. (I didn't see the pic of with the ideal setup until the next day.) I was thinking that there would be enough gas at the top at some point, and then it would explode from the the sparks igniting it. BUT, I was not thinking of the fact that it would just steadily burn off gasses, and thus, a continual fizz. For the setup, I was just thinking of a cylindrical container with a sealed divider in the middle, and a u-shaped electrode going through it and into both sides. So, the electricity would be able to arc onto the water, and, ignite gasses. But, I was not thinking of the former.

And, I know the a few milliamps accross the heart can kill you, but lets
not get to technical here. WHO is STUPID enough to do THAT!!! Besides, a few milliamps cannot easily penetrate the skin, so you would have to poke through the skin...... I have touched the two ends of my 5 amp battery a few times, and I didn't even feel a shock. I was just trying to say that one shouldn't put a zillion amps through it to speed the process, and accidently kill themself. THATS ALL.

And I'm not saying the stungun would blow up. You're just looking for ways to make me look like an idiot. :x

And, when did I say anything about water resistance!?!!?

Cl gas? Cannon freak, using Na Cl in an electrolysis machine will do nothing more than give you Cl- ions, not deadly gas.

When Na Cl is used as the electrolyte the Na will combine with the oxygen coming off the same electrode to produce sodium hydroxide. All that is left is the Chlorine gas which becomes diatomic chlorine gas, now Im no expert so if anyone can explain it better go ahead.

The gas is dangerous and a friend of mine got pretty nauseous when he made his own machine, he decided to sit around and fiddle with the electrodes and the bottle he was trying to collect hydrogen in.

Salt is a pretty crappy electrolyte regardless because it is so corrosive to the electrode, sodium hydroxide or baking soda work much better.

OK I'm going to agree with cannon freak. Some of you have misguided information on what happens when you use salt as an electrolyte. I dont care who you are, what kind of education you have, or how many cannons you've built, if you use salt, you're not so smart. Using NaCl as an electrolyte will produce chlorine gas, which is both poisonous AND corrosive. I know it does this because I am a chemistry major in college, and because I have seen idiots do it.

Dont. Use. Salt. End of story.

When you add the NaCl electrolyte, you form Na+ and Cl- ions. The Cl- ions have an excess of electrons. As a result, they will move to the anode, which is in need of electrons, and give an electron up, forming a Cl atom. Chlorine gas is diatomic, so 2 atoms combine, forming the deadly, noxious gas.

That's a good enough explanation. Use sodium bicarbonate as an electrolyte. That won't make noxious corrosive gasses. Sodium bicarbonate = H2CO3

H2CO3 (in water solution) when used as an electrolyte yields hydrogen and HCO3, which will then dissolve in the water leaving you with nothing but tiny hydrogen bubbles.

Dude, that is AWESOME!!! But, is it entirely Sodium Bicarbonate, or is there some additives?

I read this on the net recently, apparently its a bad idea to use stainless steel electrodes. The chromium comes off the electrodes and its toxic.
