Spudding Fans

Unread postAuthor: VIR3NT » Sat Jul 02, 2005 10:55 am

in my spud gun (I have a dual chamber) I have a computer fan for each chamber. The first time i launched with the fan, the fan melted and the wires were stripped of their coating. What the hell is wrong? I've seen other people with built-in fans, but theirs didn't completely get blown to shreds.

um, plastic? combustion is hot, so use a metal fan next time, and the wires can be bare but not touching each other.

i have lots of parts around (Computer guy) so i put in a metal fan and just lit it and one of the fans stayed but the other one totally got blown to shreds. even though its metal. Is my combustion too powerful?

how long is your barrel? look at the pics on here http://burntlatke.com/15cb-testday.html
if it is too long, the potato will be sucked back in.

if its not that then you have a really powerful combustion/crappy fan

heh, that is a cool page.
My barrel is 5'
I didn't have the potato sucking back in, it shot really far.
However, for my combustion chamber it is .25" thick clear walls and i'm using a mixture of 1 part pure oxygen burst and 2 parts propane burst. The shot i just did turned the potato into little shreds. I shot a golf ball after that and it shot a very long ways. I hope it didn't hit anything!

pure oxygen? what the hell were you thinking lol jk? that is the problem, that is definitly going to destroy a fan.

must be an awesome gun, if u use oxygen you dont need a fan. not a must at least. i would like to see that

DO NOT USE OXYGEN IN YOUR CANNON it WILL explode your PVC that is EXTREMELY DANGEROUS. your fans will be fine in a normal combustion, not if you add oxygen, well, you wont be fine either

Who said i was using PVC? 8)
I use plexi-plastics
(plexi glass)
It is strong enough for it.
Although the clear chamber fogs up easily and i have to wipe it down

heh, Its strong. I've shot my gun (rifle) at it before, no breaking. Go bulletproof stuffz!
BTW, This afternoon i went to the hardware store to build one for my neighbor. He wanted a standard combustion. All they had was SCH 40 ABS Cellular Core. I bought that stuff for his gun. Think it will break with just a standard application of starting fluid? Or should I get him a stronger chamber?

ABS cellular core is exactly the stuff you want to stay away from. Solid core ABS will do fine, and so will pressure rated PVC. Its not worth getting unless its pressure rated.

Ummm, this clear plastic you have probably isn't plexiglass. Most likely you are using a lexan tube. NO ONE SHOULD TRY TO USE PLEXIGLASS... ITS TOO BRITTLE. Lexan is bulletproof, this would be acceptable.

It is a plexiglass which is arcrylic. Arcrylic IS brittle, but is very strong. It does work, I pressure tested it to 500 PSI
