Is There Any Way Of Silencing A Spuddy?!?

Unread postAuthor: camdaman38 » Sun Apr 01, 2007 8:40 am

I was working out my C:B ratio on my spuddy on the burntlake calculator and my spuddies ratio is 1.1:1 and it works perfectly fine because it just launches those spuds 300ft easily but it is very loud and i live in a country town on the edge of town but i still want it to be less noisy and i herd that if the ratio 0.8"1 it isn't loud but its very powerful but to get it to that ratio the barrel has to be 2.2 metres long which is a bit over the top for me so i was wondering if there is any way of maybe silencing it or make it more quiet without changing the length of the barrel or making any maigre changes.

So if you guys have any ideas for this little project i am open to ideas.

you can either cut it down and add another end cap... or cut it in the mmiddle, cut out w.e the needed chunk is then add a coupler.
or you can add a coupler and add a little more barrel.

see i don't want to make any maigre changes if i don't have to. I am only looking for a way to make its less loud so i can shoot it off in my backyard without having to worry about the neighbours calling the cops cause i am already in trouble with them for riding my motorbike on the road and if i get in trouble again i will not be able to get my learners licence i a really won't to get them so i am trying to make it more quiet. Thats why i was wondering if i could just put some sort of attachment to the barrel to make is quiet or just add some slots to the barrel or something just so it isn't so loud. But if i need to make a new barrel to get it to it's top performance so it can be the best it can be.

But thanks for the help anyway even tho i didn't really understand what you were going on about. But thanks anyway.

juust changes that would modify the chamber barrel ratio

increasin the size of the barrel a tad would be easier then making a silencer.

ok i understand that because i just found plans for a silencer and it would work but it would weigh it down heaps but i might give it a try caus it looks interesting to make it and see if it will work. Otherwise i will just change the barrel.

or the easyest thing to do and keep your performance is to make a silncer. der..

Reducing the size of the chamber to bring the C:B ratio down to .8:1 would be easier and cheaper than building a silencer. You would increase the performance of your gun too, where as a silencer would decrease it.

Spudblaster, you are... incorrect.

A smaller chamber, in all fair and reasonable comparisons, performs worse than a bigger one.

*fair and reasonable: Assuming the ignition equipment is satisfactory, and we aren't filling empty salt mines with fuel-air mixture.
That is, I realize that there is a point at which the increased chamber volume means it'd take too long for the fuel to burn, but a 1:1.1 C:B ratio is nowhere near it.

Given identical ignition placements, as well as identical chamber outside diameters, the pressure will rise more quickly in the smaller chamber, and if it is properly matched to the barrel in terms of volume, will provide more performance than one that is oversized.

However, the difference would likely not be noticeable without extremely precise measuring equipment, and is not of great importance, unless of course, the difference was hugely exaggerated, as in your salt mine analogy.

I think some of the noise (and I say some as in just a little) is from the PVC pipe and not from the opening, has anyone tried wrapping a spud gun in a towel or something?

That would do nothing.
The explosion is on the inside and isn't passing through the walls.

The vibration of the vessel containing the explosion does indeed account for a percentage of the noise produced but it is negligible compared to the noise of the gasses escaping the muzzle.

If you want a quieter shot without a silencer, then a smaller chamber or longer barrel is the way to go.
