Hybrid question could save life!!!

Unread postAuthor: b-nice » Tue Aug 30, 2005 6:28 pm

I am building a shoulder fired hybrid and was wondering if a 4'' by 24'' chamber would be to big or should i go with a 3'' by 24'' chamber.

( do not worry it will be tested many times remotely first. the concept design is the same as Sweet Melissa that can be seen in the album.)

you're nuts for even thinking of firing a hybrid near you, unless its like a 1.5x mix. 4" will be way to big, and will cost you an assload of cash.

you know (i hope) to use ONLY sch 80 or high pressure steel/brass and also to solvent weld (if using PVC) or make sure EVERYTHING is sealed with metal, leaks can mean VERY high pressure hot gasses coming out at you.
shoulder firing is also a VERY bad idea because if by chance you get a stociometrically perfect mix the pressure created will be too much and will blow up in your face, most likely killing you. i advise EXTREMELY against doing this.

^ditto
In addition, the bastard would be too heavy to hold if you had a barrel that could harness enough energy to get some goo projectile speed. Besides, the recoil from it would knock you flat on your ass.

yeah, spudinator had a shoulder fired one (he's a crazy bastard himself) and it kicks harder than a 12 gauge shotgun. even though he did it i wouldnt recommend it, spudinator is a few fittings short of a spudgun if you know what i mean

the gun has been redisign into a mini hybrid 1.5'' sch 80 with 316 stainless steel reinforced sch80 pvc union and female adapter. it will also be sleeved with 2'' sch 80 and 2.5'' sch 40 and the chamber will not be in my face ( im rather intellegent contrary to my spelling and others opinions) it will be fired handheld with a 1.5x mix and after many tests it will be attempted with a 2x mix. i would like to know the expected power if any one knows how to calculate it. 1.5'' x 6'' with a 1.5x mix=????????

a hybrid uses compressed air and fuel together to make a super powerful gun, took me forever just to learn this online.

Kind of off-topic, but just FYI, I shoot 12 gauge shotguns a lot. My regular combustion gun kicks more than a 12 gauge if you have a heavy projectile in it. Launching a caulk tube full of concrete kicks about like a 10 gauge. I've never shot an 8... what's that like?

I've never built a hybrid. I intend to build one some day, though. In my opinion, shoulder-firing a PVC hybrid cannon is borderline suicidal. I'd only shoulder-fire a hybrid if it was made of steel and the welder was very skilled. The problem with that is, it'd weigh 45lb. Just build a nice stand for it and a 50-foot remote detonator :)

For those that don’t know what a hybrid is, and are too lazy to search the forum a bit, a hybrid uses both principals of combustion and air pressure. In a normal combustion gun, you use a mix of roughly 4% propane to 96% air. In a hybrid cannon, you inject twice as much propane as normal (for a 2x mix), and then compensate for the lack of oxygen by pressurizing the chamber with air, to bring the balance back to 4/96 (but at a higher pressure). A 2x mix is twice the "normal" amount of propane and air, and so on for 3x and 4x mixes. The compressed fuel/air mixture is kept inside the cannon by a burst disk, which ruptures upon detonating the fuel.

Obviously, pressurizing an explosive gas with air inside a piece of plastic pipe and then detonating it is a reasonably insane thing to do. Exactly why so many of us are intrigued by it. But seriously, don't fire one of those monsters from your shoulder. Normally I wouldn't care; if you blow yourself up you blow yourself up, but the way I see it, if enough people get hurt with spudguns, they'll be made illegal. So in the interest of keeping potato cannons from getting legislated into oblivion, don't do it. Thanks.

Peace,
Pete Zaria.

Cobmustions are just too weak for me.I like when the power is in my hands and to know that there is always a way to boost the it.No other gun gives such a cool recoil and chamber flash.
