It's a pipe dream....

...but it's fun to think about.

I was walking around in our steel yard and I just happened to notice some "stuff" lying around. It just screamed "MAKE A GUN FROM ME!"

Today I just pitched that gun to my boss's boss. Totally informal. Just a, "Hey, I noticed that we have 99% of the materials on hand to make a gun... ...If our welders run out of work, do you mind if I have them start assembling this stuff?"

He seemed to take the proposal favorably.

The gun?

Barrel: 19" bore, 40' long.

Chamber/Barrel ratio: 5:1 (excessive, but it works with the stuff we've got lying around)

Probably will never happen, but it could be fun! :)

PS: And we have a 150 HP portable air compressor so that's not a problem.

*Drool* seconded

It begs the question, what will you use for ammunition?

I have an old microwave I would love to get rid of! :D

A microwave is square. That kind of valve would you use. Or would you make your own?

I've got the same questions: what kind of valve? What would ammo be? 19 inch bore by 40 feet?!?

A little size reference:
IIRC, the nine main guns on the Yamato, the largest ever mounted on a battleship, were 18.1 inch bore by approximately 50 feet.

Thanks SpudStuff, posted at work and I got messed up.

On the topic of the microwave, I was assuming the use of an appropriate plug/wadding. If you want to do something enough, it will happen.

I've been thinking about the valve problem. Perhaps have a plug that is airtight against the inside of the pipe. Have 3 restraints spaced evenly around the inner diameter that will hold that plug in place as the chamber is filled. The restraints would have to be set to release at the same time to release the plug. Its a bit crude, but it would release all 19' at the same moment.

Hum... Now, if you made that a hybrid, you'd bump the "insane" scale up another 10 or 20 notches....
