Inertia. That's all I have to say. It's already moving at the same speed Earth is spinning, so it will keep in that speed. Ok, take for instance a car crash. Do you fly feet back when the car stops? Nope. You fly forward at the same speed the car was going. Same rules aply for something flying in the air. Throw a baseball north or south, does it curve feet off with the spinning of the Earth? Nope. So, the potato would go the same place. The only way this could happen is if the Earth changed speeds while the potato was in the air...

Heh, sorry for the worthless post, but since it's already kicked up I figure it won't harm anything.

I have the TV on (watching O Brother Where Art Thou) and right when I put my mouse over this thread to click on it, they said "What goes up must come down" in the movie.

I just thought that was an amazing coincidence and had to post it :p

fullmetaljacket, the earth would exert a force of its rotation on the spud gun and thus the spud. the spud would still rotate with the earth while in the air. try throwing a ball up in a car, it doesnt come flying back in ur face rather it continues forward cause of the force of the car that was on the ball.
