Golf Ball Machinegun & Short Video

Just build a cannon and want to show it off? Post it in here.

I'd like to dedicate this launcher to the memory of Bill Vogt, who recently passed away. He once e-mailed me about building one. At the time, we assumed that a launcher like this would need a massive air reservoir, as the "cloud" design BB guns ate up air so quickly.
...But then again, who would (or could) make a hopper large enough to hold hundreds of golf balls? Although that was not his intention, we had both figured that an industrial compressor (the towable diesel ones that you can use to run a jack-hammer) would be neeeded.

This one was built on a much smaller scale, and can be either hand-held or ground launched. I really miss hearing from "chewy" as he was a pleasure to correspond with.:(

...The "magazine" (or "hopper"?) was originally 9" longer, and was designed to hold about 10 golfballs. Unfortunately, the grossly undersized "1" valve couldn't spit out more than 4-5 balls. After cutting the exceess length off, and putting it back together with another 2" Coupling, I came up with this:

<img src="http://img.villagephotos.com/p/2003-9/398596/GBL1.JPG">

At 100psig, the launcher will slam 5 balls through a sheet of 1/4" plywood. The Barrel portion is sleeved all the way back to the breech end. It even slid into the necked-down portion of the 2" Male Adapter.

<a href="http://img.villagephotos.com/p/2003-9/398596/GBL2.JPG">Valve</a>
<a href="http://img.villagephotos.com/p/2003-9/398596/GBL3.JPG">Breech</a>
<a href="http://img.villagephotos.com/p/2003-9/398596/GBL4.JPG">Muzzle Port</a>
<a href="http://img.villagephotos.com/p/2003-9/398596/GBL5.JPG">Rear-View</a>
<a href="http://img.villagephotos.com/p/2003-9/398596/GBMGmag.GIF">Magazine Cut-away</a>

I used a 1" hole saw to drill a hole through the 1.5" SDR21 after it was sleeved in the 2" SCH80. (The hole was drilled using a drill press, through the opening of the 1"NPT threaded portion of the Tee fitting) I was originally going to use a 3" or even 4" Tee, but had second thoughts about golf-balls slamming around the inside Tee as they were agitated by the ait inlet... This way, they flow straight out of the magazine, The air pressure drop is next to nothing, and the balls probably? have more velocity.

I couldn't help myself, so I made another goofy video:

Beautiful and great design, a fitting tribute. I think you may be on to something here DR with the whole TBMG and now this, I'm tempted to try one myself.

An appropriate tribute to Bill. The "Vogt patern" MG is destined to become a household spudding term, matching or exceding "Vortex" and "Cloud" MGs in universal recognition.

(edit) DR: Watching the video, its hard to get a feel for the shot string length. Could you please illuminate?

WOW! That thing is amazing. I take back what I said in the TBMG thread, you're not bored, your REALLY bored.
Nice gun!

Yowzers DR!

So how do the golfballs behind the hole get sucked forward? Venturi effect or something like that? or do you just slightly tilt the cannon forward? [:p]

I was wondering the same as Mr.Plow Dr. how do the golf balls actualy get fired? i don't see how the air is pushing them out....

but once again you've surpassed my skills by a HUGE LONGSHOT in building yet another awesome cannon.

At 100psig, and from a distance of approx. 15 feet ( Hey, I was in my garage!) the "string" length, if I understand you correctly is as follows:
<a href="http://img.villagephotos.com/p/2003-9/398596/stringlength.JPG">Before impact</a>
<a href="http://img.villagephotos.com/p/2003-9/398596/stringlength2.JPG">.07 seconds (2 balls)</a>
<a href="http://img.villagephotos.com/p/2003-9/398596/stringlength3.JPG">.07 seconds (1 ball)</a>
<a href="http://img.villagephotos.com/p/2003-9/398596/stringlength4.JPG">.06 seconds (1 ball)</a>
<a href="http://img.villagephotos.com/p/2003-9/398596/stringlength5.JPG">.07 seconds (1 ball)</a>
...5 balls in just 0.27 seconds? ( who really knows? ) 60 seconds / .027 = 222.22 rounds per minute? [:p]
Not that you could maintain such a rate of fire. - The launcher only holds 5-6 balls, and the reservoir is way too small.

The "Bernoulli Effect"? The gun works the exact same way as the Tennis-Ball Machinegun, except that there no "hopper". As I stated earlier, I was hesitant to allow 5-10 golfballs to slam off of the inner walls of a 3-4" Tee with 100-125psi behind them.

I'm guessing that the air inlet (which is a <b>smaller</b> 1" dia. hole) creates a "venturi effect" , the exact same way that the "cloud" design works. It's just that the projectiles are already "inline" with the barrel.
...As one get pushed down the barrel, the next is sucked in behind it, and then pushed down after it passes the 1" air inlet???

I've tried to launch 5 golballs at a time out of a sleeved barrel. But when they are packed in one on top of another, (and FORWARD of the air flow) all they do is come out like this:<a href="http://img.villagephotos.com/p/2003-9/398596/spray.GIF">spray pattern</a>

This is much more accurate, and I'm (once again) guessing that the golfballs have more velocity... The air that's being dumped out of the valve isn't pushing the mass of 5 balls all at once, but rather one at a time (in rapid succession)...I've tried to shoot 5 balls at a time into 1/4" plywood ( from about 50 feet away ) and only one or two will puncture the wood.- the rest just bounce off.

All in all, I built it because of Bill <b>and</b> because it was something different. Thanks for all the replies everyone! And thank you, Bill, for the inspiration.

Oh, Benoulli! shoulda known:D. You know, according to Heisenberg's Uncertainty Principle...

Really, that's great. This is what I'm wondering: If I copied your design but used a 1.5" Goyen QEV (like on the CylBolt or ChewyCyl) would that be better? It would dump much more air, but then again that could be a downside (air gone too quickly, doesnt fire all the golfballs). What do you think?
