@Eddbot: *Evil laugh*
Fear my paradox cannon that makes seemingly logical concepts completely incomprehensible. (May not actually exist)

I also still need to work out a cannon that will work by using a short cut to solving differential calculus and using the time that was saved to send the projectile a negative distance in a negative time, thus propelling it from the barrel at phenomenal speed (Warning: May be taking bollocks)

Agreed completely, that's what I think while trawling through Google patents. However, the skill really lies in taking existing concepts and adapting them to materials and techniques that one has at hand.
I'll die before I make a clone of someone elses design.

No really.

Spudgunning is far from out of new concepts to field, I don't see the challenge in imitation. Most of my interest is in design rather than actual use. I know when a design will work and once it does that as planned in the field thats the job done. Time to design a new one.

True originality is very hard to find, it's more of a bending and shaping existing concepts and objects to fit into a package you're happy with as you say. Still, that can provide enough uniqueness to be going on :)

A bit extreme, but I would agree, I won't make an exact clone of anyone else's design. It's something that rather keeps me away from combustions, because although they don't have astounding power, the thing they lack in my view is much originality. There are a few things you can do to relieve that a little, but not a lot.
Same thing with hybrids - although they have a lot of power, I don't think I could do anything original enough to content myself that it's different enough for me.

But pneumatics have room for expansion I think, even if originality just comes from trying (and failing) to compete with hybrids for muzzle energy.

Well, for now, I have enough design ideas to sate my hunger for innovation and originality.
