Larda wrote:Here is a mock-up of how its going to look with a rifle stock from a BB gun. I am also going to insulate the barrel and add a lexan shield to prevent any contact with the high voltage parts.
I am not planing to do any full power shots when i am holding it in my hands and will take the necessary safety precautions so it will be relatively safe.

So

No not really.

The damage shots seriously look like a .50 cal hit them.

I was just looking through the first page and then saw there were 9 other  BUT my suggestion to make it better it to use a hocky puck SCR for the switch. I have made some small scale coilguns and know that SCR's seem to be the only things to handle all of the current and voltage (even the transistors rated high enough burnt out. Anything mechanical doesnt take long for the electrodes to wear out. By the looks of things this is the best gun like this I have seen (Better than the militaries coil gun) I think you could make a rail gun like the navys... It is still in dev but so is yours...

i keep getting images of this in my head when i think of the "perfect" cannon

The perfect cannon should be both powerful and portable. Now I dont see someone lugging that capacitor bank trough the field
Not even talking about "fueling" it with electricity.

this thing is military capable. probably For defense though. you cant lug this thing through a field. You may also think about actually propelling the aluminum powder forward then igniting it and you then have super magnetic high powered gas, making it even more powerful.

I agree with some of the earlier posts, we need a separate forum for electromagnetic/electrothermal guns. A few years back, I started working on a small coil gun, but I never got past making a few coils and a 4" cardboard tube body. Never did find and suitable capacitors.

by the seemingly harmless looks of this beast, I think u should get a stronger retaining block for the recoil, judging by the picture

look at the date of the last post...its 7 months old...try not to kick up old topics and pm some one about it, and as far as i know larda has not been on for a long time so dont bother pming him, try ragnarok, jsr or starman, they are out forums most experienced members.

Oh great, now I'm going to get PMs about cannons I didn't even build.
Such is the way of being considered a spudding expert I suppose. :tongue3:

In answer to said question, given it uses aluminium plasma as a propellant, yes, the muzzle blast will be composed of plasma.
That's what all the bright flash and "sparks" are in this photo:

Bear in mind, most muzzle flashes cannot be seen in the day time. The fact that this one can be seen tells you how spectacularly bright it is relatively - indeed, it's a plasma, not just hot gasses like most muzzle flashes; and thus far more energetic.

so its the same thing in plasma tvs?
