Burst Disk Cannon

I made this gun because I was bored and had most of the parts lying around. I trigger it with a 12g CO2 tire inflater. The whole gun cost under $5 all i had to buy was the union and the 1" male adapters. Right now I am using 5 layers of aluminum foil as my burst disk. They generally burst around 65 psi. Don't get onto me for using a soda bottle as a chamber. I just used it because it was available . They can hold 125 psi, and I only go to 65 psi.

Specs

Valve: Burst Disk
Barrel: 18" x 1" barrel
Chamber: 16.9 oz. A and W bottle
Fill valve: Schrader valve
Trigger: 12g CO2 tire inflater

cool gun! :)
I thing a 3/4" barrel would be better than 1".

Thank you. Well like a said this is a spare parts cannon and I only had 1" pipe, and one inch pipe fits c cell batteries almost perfectly.

My compliments on your choice of A&W root beer... 8)

However I will get on to you for using it as a pneumatic chamber. Spend another $5 (or less) and replace it with some 2" sched 40, bushing and endcap.

It's good to see another root beer drinker.

Well I gave my reasons and justifications for this in the original post, and this gun wont be used frequently.

Sorry about the double post, but no one seems to respond when I use the edit button. Can anyone explain how to post a preview picture?

Upload your pics to Imageshack and paste the direct address into your post here. Then when editing, highlight the full address and click on the Img button.

I think he meant so it's visible on the forum section as a preview.

Does this mean that the soda bottle chamber is temporarly?
Would love to see the bottle replaced with a chunk of PVC on its rear end.
On 125 psi this thing will pack a good punch.

Yea definitely just spend 5 bucks and get some 2" PVC and endcap. You can make the chamber bigger, and thus more power

Eventually I will replace the bottle with pvc and put a longer barrel on it.

Actually, I've heard that if you just take some chicken wire, or gutter mesh, you can wrap it around the bottle a few times, and cover it in duct or electrical tape.

This would help prevent the risk of shrapnel by a lot in case the thing ever explodes.

Not saying that you shouldn't get a pvc airtank (that's the FIRST thing you should do), but in case you don't have the money right now or other unknown reasons, it is an excellent alternative.

SPOOK: That is an interesting idea, and I haven't heard of that before. Money isn't the problem it's lack of motivation.

O i c. I thought I read somewhere that you didn't have enough cash.

Edit: My bad, I was thinking of another thread about a "semi auto" metal gun when I read the guy had a lack of money.

Not necessarily, a stronger burst disk for the same chamber size will definitely give you more power however. For a given quantity of air, small volume/high pressure will give you more power than large volume/low pressure, there's some data in this thread.

Shrapnel isn't really an issue when PET bottles explode, they tend to tear as opposed to shattering. The best protection you need in that situation is a good set of earplugs :)
