All right children, and adults too, I finished my cannon that i STILL claim can hit 1/2 mile ranges.

You will just have to wait for the post, as i hope to get some damage videos and photos this weekend.

You do know that a line drawn on google earth isn't proof we need proof like measuring it on a meter wheel or video proof.

I don't doubt that there are projectiles with which the cannon in question could hit a half mile range. However a 1/2" bouncy ball - or equally a 1/2" steel ball bearings - are not amongst the projectiles which could do it.

Even with cannons substantially more powerful than that one, I am simply unable to replicate your results. This is in both computer modelling and in actual real-world tests with aerodynamically similar projectiles (which I did about two years back. It took me a while to get the data back off my old hard drive - it's a bugger when my laptop will only accept one at a time).

I don't think anyone here would argue that your sprinkler valve cannon can possibly exceed the power of my HEAL (as HEAL is larger, higher pressure and with a much better valve).
In the tests, even HEAL was incapable of getting either a (saboted) 1/2" steel ball bearing, or a 20mm ball bearing much closer than to within 200 yards to the half mile you're claiming.

You're claiming nearly 900 yards. I'm unable to get those projectiles to much further than about 700 yards with a cannon that makes yours look like a total pansy.
What you are claiming is simply aerodynamically impossible. The projectiles have too much drag to make it possible to get them that distance with the velocities your cannon would be capable of.

Provide us with solid evidence that you have managed to achieve what science says you can't, or admit your error.
It's crunch time, and Google Earth screenshots carry as much water with us as a rusty colander would.

Either way, I want to stop seeing the claim unless it has proper evidence attached.

Looking back at the google earth picture... it clearly says .31miles or 545 yards.... That may be feasible, So where did 1/2 mile come from???

He said that shot was at 50PSI if I recall correctly.

So, i believe all this arguing can stop now... Until i get a video of THIS gun shooting the 1/2 mile range.... the arguments should stop.

ummmm, could you quit calling us "children", most of us are at least as old as you, many older. Very few of us are under 15, most are at least 18. When you call us children, you imply that we are inferior to you, but really, you've built what...2 pvc guns? Most of us have built...10+ high-power metal guns. Even I haven't done that. So please show some respect. Not to be noob-bashing, but this really bothers me.

Im sorry this is not possible with all the physics and everything added up there is no way that you got half a mile. I built a 450 psi marble rifle and shot a steel ball bearing and it only went 400 yards. not even close to half a mile. And i was using a piston valve and 9 times the pressure.

With what cannon and what was your projectile?
Hits 1200 FPS with a bouncy ball.... IF my chrony is accurate.
Not to be mean, but you did not shoot 1200fps with a bouncy ball from that cannon. Infact, i'd like to see a cannon on Spudfiles that can send a bouncy ball 1200fps that is a pneumatic, made from PVC and doesn't have any pipe fittings over 3" in diameter.

I'd say the only thing you could shoot with that cannon and the 5' barrel that would come close to 1000fps, is a .12g 6mm BB.

Several people have told you that your chrony messed up with that reading, i'm telling you know, you did not hit 1200fps with a bouncy ball. No way. So don't even bother saying "I hit mach 1....IF my chrony is right", because you didn't.

Not trying to be mean, just saying.

I'd really like to know how you go about finding a .50" projectile after launching it over 1/2 mile away. Hell...I can loose them right on my work bench yet, you manage to find them 1/2 mile downrange. Are your projectiles equipped with Lo-Jac?

When I make range statements, it's because I have gone and found the landings. It is why I haven't made any golfball range claims yet. I simply haven't found any I shot for distance. Spuds, apples, shirts, bottles, sodas, etc are found and measured. It should be the minimum standard for distance claims. If you claim a distance, please mention how you found it as well as the condition of the projectile.

I certainly understand that. The ridge line in the pic is a measured 1,200 yards down range. GB's are still climbing out when they cross the ridge line and disappear on the other side. I'm not about to go looking for them and until I do, I can't make any distance claims. :wink:

Amazingly, my 420-450m range statements are pretty accurate. I live next to a golf course you see, and when the weather is bad and the golf course is closed I fire off a few rounds from my house down to the golf course.

I number or initial my golfballs before firing them and usually if I fire about 5, I can find 2 of them. I then take a landmark reference and jump on Google Earth. :)
