well it has been awhile since I've been on this site but before the 4th of July I decided it would be appropriate to start another project for me and my buddies to play with. I believe I mention my interest in a recoiling spud gun carriage to control the recoil on my large cannon and a week ago I started work on just that.

I got together with my friend to think of ideas and develop a rough overall plan. he was quick to bring up a linear bearing system made from skateboard wheel bearings and right angle aluminum beams he even gave me the bearings and bolts.

on June 30 I completed the linear bearing system
on July 2 my and my friend spent 6 hours after work working on the gun carriage
on July 3 I completed the carriage but it was wet from the rain
on the morning of July 4 I painted the carriage and gun so it would dry before my friends arrived

sights made from two sheets of plexiglass and adjusted by erasing and redrawing the sight picture with dry erase marker, it kinda works

a few hits in the back yard fence, it's amazing how durable chain link fence is

here is a close up of the rail system and how it interacts with the skateboard ball bearings

the right angle rails are secured to the using coupler sleeves with slots cut out that are glued to the chamber since any invasive securing method would compromised the chamber's integrity

I can almost imagine another american revolution of people towing cannons like those with lawn mowers to fortified positions lol.

Very nice!!! Looks really smooth in the video and doesn't appear as though the recoil system would take away from its performance. Long time ago I had plans for this on a smaller scale, but it seems to really be worth it when dealing with large caliber and high power launchers. I love the whole setup. Nice job man :thumbright:
Those bearings look like Bones REDS...

I'm scared .lol that's a monster nice cannon. camo paint job on the lawnmower and some razor wire rapped around a bodged bull-bar that will be so cool :D

Well done sir. This is roughly how I intended to build my next project, although the gun returning to battery should be a bit smoother. :)

I don't really mind the quick return to battery, I'd just like the long barrel to be more stable so I could do some precise shooting with this thing, my dream is to be plinking milk jugs at 100feet 8)

I wasn't necessarily referring to speed -- it just seemed to shake around returning to battery.

And that's a good goal if I ever heard one. :)

Very, very cool, kudos! And glad to see you're still knocking about :)
