19mm diameter projectile made from a still spike. With the fins, it is just under 2inch diameter. 50mm with sabot. About 5 inches long.
To fill the barrel, my friend and I used dense foam to make a 50mm sabot. That tape is just for looks. You can see the tip of the projectile sticking out the top, it is painted orange for easy retrieval after firing.
My first time trying to photograph welding, I thought it looked cool...
Well we did test it and it worked perfectly! My friend and I fired it into a dirt pile at some land he owns and it really pummeled the ground. We were using an Old-Spice powered, BBQ igniter lit cannon with 2 inch barrel. We're currently building a new projectile as well as a better cannon. I'll keep you people updated if you're interested.

Good work!!
Maybe make it a bit thinner so it will have less area to penetrate.
Or make the fins out of a thinner plate so it would reduce drag, and decrease effect of the fins slowing it down when going through w/e your trying to penetrate.

That is very nice.
I would make one but I dont have anything to weld with.

I just need a lathe, some steel, a welder/welding lessons and a welding machine.

Yeah, that sounds like a good idea. Although it did fire well, it traveled considerably slower than the normal things I shoot like fruit and what not.Zen/// wrote:Good work!!

Well, we aren't quite aiming for a perfect penetrating round. We want more of a total-annihilation round. One that makes the targets explode into shreds. But we have the supplies to make lots of these, so we'll just experiment and see what different designs do.

How's the accuracy?
You cant "make the targets explode into shreds" if you cant hit them.

We fired it for a distance of about 20yards maybe and combined with the recoil and the sabot flying everywhere I didn't get a good look at high straight it traveled. But accuracy isn't my main concern.
I suppose I'll go into more detail-
My original reason for making this came from my new addiction- high speed photography. Here's my latest experiment. Eggs + paintball gun.
I have 50+ of these shots, a whole time lapse I'm making into a video.
So I want to make high speed photos of melons and anything else being shot with these steel projectiles.
So, the cannon will be really close to the target for best accuracy. But never the less, I would like to test different fins and diameters and everything to make a round that's good for destroying trees and stuff just for fun.

I love high speed photos.
Try different projectiles of different caliber, since me and others want to improve the preformance of the various projectiles launched at various things.
Like a marble and how it spins, a battery tumbleing in flight or the supersonic waveform of condensed air coming out of the muzzle.

How durable are batteries? That sounds interesting but not if I get splattered with acid.
I was just struck by genius!
So I've wanted to shoot marbles for a while but didn't want to take the time to make something just for it.
I just realized I can use my paintball gun. For a sabot, I can just take a little square cut from an old rag and wrap it around the back half of the marble to fill the barrel.
PRESTO! Muzzle-loading CO2 marble gun! Boy I'm going to have fun with this...

I like a lot!High Speed Camera, you are on verge of the next generation of spudgun history.High Speed recording of potatoes in flight.
Were did you get your HighSpeed from and how much did it cost you?
Damage pictures of the dart would be nice if you could
