If I were you, I would try going to a tyre place and ask for some used lead weights that they use to balance wheels. They will probably sell you some used ones cheaply.
I wonder how much deeper the ocean would be without sponges.

Tire shops are usually the best. Go to a mom and pop store (not a major chain) first, then hit the franchised stores. Offer to buy it by the bucket; you might be able to get a 5 gallon bucket full for $20.00. If not, then offer $.20/lb for whatever they have.

Don’t know about you, but ‘round my house the pellet trap is always a good place to look for lead… actually you can find lead just about anywhere in my house from all the pellets I’ve dropped…

Tire weights, OLD plumbing drains(try your local city works department), x-ray departments (pipe mills, hospitals, etc.), shooting range.

Go to a good fishing shop and get some downrigger balls. The cheaper 12lb balls are like 15 bucks.

Air rifle pellets? May be a bit pricey, though.

Indeed, why pay for lead that has been processed to fairly tight tolerances, only to rearrange it?
