not exactly hollow tip but still the concept is similar, flares out on impact to create a larger hole, and a steel penetrator

I found this bad @$$, with some mods could make a simple hollow tip with steel penetrator type ammo. it appears to be used for dry wall, you push it in a hole and screw, the outer part flares and you get a strong mounting thingy in dry wall

pretty sure they are "drywall screws". You can buy a box of 500 at Home Depot for....idk....say, $8-12?

depends where you live...

I can find prices for you and post a link. Whats your closest hardware store?

only a couple problems I see with the ammo. Unless you are using a rifled barrel and a plastic sabot that would engage with the rifling it would start to tumble as soon as it left the barrel. Maybe if you added a nice fluffy tail of some sort it would fly straight. You would have to experiment.

I might have some of these in my garage, if I get a little time maybe I'll try the tail idea, and send one off into a board or something at 300psi.
Also you would have to take out the screw and replace it with a nail, or grind the threads off of the screw if you wanted it to flair out on impact.
If you did that though and got it to fly straight I bet it would be pretty devastating. If I do try it I will take pics and dig this thread up again for ya.

I don't really think this would be effective as ammo. In order to be useful, you'd have to remove the screw and replace it with a nail, otherwise there'd be no chance of the jacket expanding. Even then, it'd be extremely difficult to stabilize, the shot would have to be very powerful to make the jacket expand, and the jacket wouldn't even expand inside the target.

Nice thought, but I really don't think it would work.

Why would you have to replace it with a nail fror it to flair out :?

because, screws have these things called threads on them.... and in order for the fitting to compress... you need to turn the screw.... which i assume you can't do while its going really really really fast.... unless your name is god.

why dont you turn the casing around'' so that when it hits the target the jacket opens due to the force of it hitting the target.

dunno if this would work you'd have to stablize the back of it with a feather or something to get it to fly straight, and even then you'd have to put a nail in there to replace the screw to get it to flare out.

looks like it might be a good piece to test out...

With your requirements, why not make something like this? It is indeed both cheap and easy to make.

'If you wanted you could add a nail to the tip of my old hole puncher ammo.

I suppose if the round was weighted properly you could get some very good results.
