Ok this may sound stupid but me and my friends have airsoft/paintball play in my private property about 12 acres and we mostly use those 2 amunition but now i have a sniper 1/4 barrel and trying to find a non lethal ammo to fit snug in barrel airsoft bbs to small and i need it to shoot pretty long range so it will loose velocity. but my friend may just use same ammo so any ideas on ammo for airsoft/paintball/anything play?

It's also dependent on velocity. I certainly would not want to get hit by a mach 3 nerf dart. Hell, the (tools) over at NH get upset and start crying when someone makes a half decent pneumatic gun.
Non lethal ammo for law enforcement is usually rubber/foam balls or beanbags.
You want to test any ammo on a medium like ballistics gel first. You'd usually think of a cotton bud as a harmless object?
Not when it's going that fast.
Think lightweight or soft ammunition, but the biggest consideration should really be velocity.

These days they call them "less lethal" because in the right circumstances, they can still inflict fatal wounds.inonickname wrote:Non lethal ammo for law enforcement is usually rubber/foam balls or beanbags.

What happened to the days when all the cotton bud did was clean my ears. Now it can be turned into something lethal

It's all a matter of velocity, water will happily cut through steel if its travelling fast enough.spud downunder wrote:What happened to the days when all the cotton bud did was clean my ears. Now it can be turned into something lethal

Oooo yer, Like those water pressure cutting things, i forget what they are called. But yer its kinda scary when you can make things like coton buds do that kinda damage.

Carbide or diamond grit is used during water cutting as an abrasive.
Most things can be quite dangerous if you push them hard enough.
Another cool thing about the cotton buds, if your target is further from the barrel the bud will self destruct from all the stresses, often leaving a scatter of holes in the target..

well im going to be shooting it at around 800 fps so maybe i will try rubber ballistics balls what size fits in 1/4 copper?

800fps, you might as well use bb's... at least they'll show up on xrays easy... just an fyi, a .40 paintball at 800fps wil explode a gallon of water almost as impressively as a golfball... at that kind of velocity, someones going to get hurt, and not in a goodway....
And you really need to change the topic name, because as it stands, you make it sound as if we are normally making lethal ammo....
And we don't make ammo for living things, because we don't shoot at living things!!!!

I agree completely on the impact with small high speed stuff, even if soft. I dented a car door with a marshmallow. In space impacts with a chip of paint do considerable damage at high speed. The picture is from a glancing blow. I was chronographing some shots 15 feet away.inonickname wrote:It's also dependent on velocity. I certainly would not want to get hit by a mach 3 nerf dart. I had this same problem a while ago, wanted to find something I could safely shoot at my friends with a pneumatic. I never really found a solution, the sad truth is that at the power level of any reasonable launcher, pretty much anything is dangerous. However, my thinking was that organic ammunition might work, like a chunk of banana or something that would just splatter on impact to dissipate the energy (like a paintball, but biodegradeable).
Another idea for spud gun combat that might be acceptably safe is to make a couple of "tanks" out of like a wooden superstructure on a wagon or something, and fight from the safety of those against each other. Not the same as foot combat, but still potentially fun. Just remember to carefully test your guns and ammo against the armor at point blank before deciding its safe.
