pvc primer help
It's late night and all the hardwares are close and i want to complete my gun but too bad im out of purple primer. the only thing i still have is pvc cement so could pvc cement work alone without the primer?
Boys do what they can, Men do what they want
Try, mineral turpantine, methylated spirits, rubbing alcohole and make sure the fittings are as clean as possible..(dry the oily residue if using turpantine)
regardless of weather you use primer or not it will still cement together,..
and work !!!,,use heaps of glue and let it dry for an hour

This is rubbish advice guys. Come on, don't give advice if you don't know what your saying. Unsafe. Only way to put it.
There are solvents (eg. a mix of methyl-ethyl ketone and acetone) that could be used as a substitute for primer, though if you can't get your hands on primer then those aren't looking too good.
Just wait until tomorrow.

Guys? I didnt give any advice. I would only have condoned not using the primer if he was building a simple combustion. Anything more and it is obviously, very unsafe. Thats why I asked what he was building before making an assessment.inonickname wrote:This is rubbish advice guys.
The bolded portion of this statement is more dangerous than the use or non-use of primer!FORE!!!! wrote:Try, mineral turpantine, methylated spirits, rubbing alcohole and make sure the fittings are as clean as possible..(dry the oily residue if using turpantine)

Do not use launcher or pressurize it until 24 hours after cement application!
The safest approach is to always use primer, cement and allow 24 hour cure time prior to use.
Haste make waste and possible injuries!

You have a point, but I wasn't referring to you specifically (obviously).jmadden91 wrote:Guys? I didnt give any advice. If it's only one or two fittings how about epoxy?
Seriously, just wait, buy primer, and give it the full twenty four hours.

No problems jmadden.
You do understand the function of primer don't you?
And also, you've just rattled off a list of chems which you have no clues for incompatibilities or risks. Also, these are completely unsuitable as primers. Methyl-Ethyl ketone and acetone mixture should be used.mineral turpentine, methylated spirits, rubbing alcohol

can i ask why u would recomend using epoxy over cement??
dwv fittings tend to be very shiny and smooth in the fitting with not much for the epoxy to grab on to,wouldnt a solvent cement make a better bond considering it basically melts the 2 surfaces together???
sorry about the missleadiing advice, i dont use primer at all i just use green pressure rated glue and havent had a failure yet with my cannon building and i use the shit everyday at work without a failure ,installing pressure lines ,i usually give it half an hour before turning on the pump to 800-1000kpa water pressure, the only time i get a leak is when the apprentice glues a fitting
@roughboy what exactly are u building ?

Jesus, I hope you haven't used epoxy before.dwv fittings tend to be very shiny and smooth in the fitting with not much for the epoxy to grab on to,wouldnt a solvent cement make a better bond considering it basically melts the 2 surfaces together???
Rule of epoxy:
Sand surfaces first.
Do you say that to make it sound like a lot, or because you don't know a common measure? 145 Psi.1000kpa
Water does NOT compress, and therefore stores substantially less energy than gasses at the same pressure.water pressure
Given the context, I'd have thought you would realize I was talking about without primer.can i ask why u would recomend using epoxy over cement??
Even though the container specifically states at least twenty four, and to use a suitable primer?half an hour

yes ive used epoxy before ,still dosent answer the question tho regardles of weather its been sanded or not ,why would u recomend it over solvent cement??? if its just a few fittings to glue?
1000kpa this unit of measurement is what modern day plumbing schools use, its only after coming to spudfiles have i had to convert to psi to fit in
like how lot of people on here use inches, i was taught to use mm/cm
which again is modern day schooling ,i cant believe people still use feet and inches on here, didnt they change the old system from metric to imperial or something like that 20 years ago?
anyways ill shut up now, peace mr nickname

This bolded statement indicates to me that you must not understand that a lot of new members or those unfamilar with pneumatic launchers are even less skilled than your so called apprentices.FORE!!!! wrote:sorry about the missleadiing advice, i dont use primer at all i just use green pressure rated glue and havent had a failure yet with my cannon building and i use the crap everyday at work without a failure ,installing pressure lines ,i usually give it half an hour before turning on the pump to 800-1000kpa water pressure, the only time i get a leak is when the apprentice glues a fitting
Would you use a pneumatic launcher at 150psi that was cemented 30 minutes ago by one of your new apprentices that have never heard of PVC cement before?

Sure hope you aren't installing pressurized water systems in homes and buisnesses. Last think most buyers want to have to do is rip out all the PWS system and redo it in a completed building because it wasn't done to building code.FORE!!!! wrote:... i dont use primer at all i just use green pressure rated glue and havent had a failure yet with my cannon building and i use the crap everyday at work without a failure ,installing pressure lines ,i usually give it half an hour before turning on the pump to 800-1000kpa water pressure, the only time i get a leak is when the apprentice glues a fitting
Glad I don't work in whatever shop you work in.
