NFS-DW? is it safe.

I found this pipe with the rating NFS-DW not PW and it was rated to 230 psi is it safe to use on a air cannon. It was three inch pipe.

That is probably DWV pipe but the V didnt print. I dont believe there is DW pipe. Even though it is rated, it is probably cellular core, which is not safe to use.

Is it ABS (black) or PVC (White)? Pressure rated ABS is great. PVC is brittle.

It was just run of the mill white pvc. So Abs is good for air cannons?

You cant get pressure rated 3 inch pipe at Home depot. I think they only have up to 2 inch nsf/pw there. It will clearly say it on the pipe, nsf/pw, or nsf/dwv! You want nsf/pw, not the dwv. dwv is not safe for a pneumatic!!

Check the links in my sig. The PVC Mouse Musket was retired due to a crack. The ABS DWV Test Cannon is still going strong. It is due it's annual pressure test.

I got the idea to try it when I found my cell core pipe had 2 tough layers. Each layer was thicker than a thin 2 Liter pop bottle which is pressure rated. Thicker, double wall with cell core in between should at least match a pop bottle. Testing showed this to be the case. Just like a bottle of cola, it doesn't shatter when dropped and holds pressure just fine.

Might be true in most cases Matty...but if it has a rating on it...that makes it pressure rated wouldn't ya think?

I know I can go to my local plumbing store and find pressure rated abs DWV too...it's rated for a whopping 50psi, and the rating is printed right on the pipe. If I go to another store, they carry pipe by a different manufacturer and it does not have any rating printed on it....go figure.

I think it worthy of some investigation before declaring it unsuited or otherwise....not sure off hand what NSF-PW 3" pvc is rated for...anyone??


Also doesn't make much sense with it being "NFS"...should be "NSF".

If the pipe is PVC and has NSF-DWV written on it as well as a pressure rating then it is rated for pressure and can be used safely.

At gippeto , I have had 4 inch dwv blow up on me at 110 psi so I personally will not reccomend anyone to use it. 3 inch nsf\pw sch 40 pipe is rated at 260 psi. For a little extra money its worth getting the good stuff.If its bigger than 2 inch at home depot and is pvc sch 40 its dwv. @ mr.c would you use 3 inch dwv sch.40???[/list]

The DWV part is irrelevant if it has a pressure rating. If I recall correctly, it just means that it can be used for Drain, Waste, Vent applications. Perhaps there's a specific standard that makes DWV pipe favourable over PW pipe in certain applications but I'm unsure of what that standard could be.

This isn't run-of-the-mill DWV pipe, it's DWV pipe with a pressure rating. You're thinking of the typical DWV pipe without a rating that we criticize often.

Pressure rated or not, its garbage. dwv, like you said, is used for drain waste venting and its CELL CORE pvc and breaks easily. 9 out of 10 plumbers wont even use it because it constantly breaks and its not worth the hassle in replacing it. If you hold a decent size piece 4 to 5 feet, over your head and drop it on a hard surface its going to break. I would use it for a barrel but thats it. Definatly not a chamber. If you wanna use it, feel free, but I wouldnt. Go to a plumbing supply store and get the good stuff!!
