I knew I should have put a bet on it
I think it probably stayed sealed to the barrel when the piston actuated and was shot out with the potato.
It was too flexible for one screw to hold, evidently. The piston came out with the screw still in it, just with an eighth of an inch sticking out, where the silicone disc was.

Going back to harder rubber or are you going to try nailing the silicone on again?

I reckon a dirty great bolt, a massive washer and a crapload of epoxy will fix that just fine.

Can hot glue gun molding do the same trick and stand up better?
