thx jimmy, the 50mm shell was well balanced to my surprise, i tried to watch it the entire flight and i never seen it tumble, it fish tailed like crazy going up and coming down. this one shot farther than my other shells due to the extra nose weight im sure. all together it has about 2 inches of bondo in the nose. im going to add about a 3 foot streamer tail for 2 reasons, 1. to get it to fly more steady and 2. to help locate the shell if it accidently goes into the tall grass. i lost one shell already. btw i have to shoot it almost straight up because it shoots so high in the air, firing it at this angle it still lands about 200 yards away with only 80 psi.

Spuddin: Cool, sounds like the round is really close to being aerodynamically stable, perhaps needs to be just a little bit longer, or have just a little more weight in the nose.

Of course, streamers will work also.

i made one of the shells longer by cementing a piece of 1" pipe inside the 1 1/2" shell and cementing 3 small stabilizing fins at the base made from a thin wall pipe cut with a drimmel.

your a pretty good craftsman I hope you keep with spudding for awhile I think you could make some really neat stuff in the future

this look fun but I just wished it had more range

thx man, its a fun hobby. so many ideas on this site im glad i came across it. it kind of sparked my interest in spud guns again.

i have looked at a few parachute delay ideas here and can only come up with the theory that there has to be some kind of timer device so the shell can hit its apogee before deploying. im thinking of a small spring loaded wind up device. the search goes on. btw i'm currently working on a site mechanism for my mortar. wish i could find one somebody has already made.

Mortar Sight Device

This my attempt at designing a sighting device for my mortar. the higher you raise the barrel the sight arm will rotate due to the weight on the bottom until you reach the max range without going too far so that the round would start falling short. The top numbers is the range for the low psi, the bottom numbers are for the high psi. This thingy majigadobber will attach to the barrel. any ideas please post.

If you had a rifled barrel you could use a centrifugal clutch to hold the parachute in the back. (google it)

Also I had some nice preliminary results packing the parachute in real tight and attaching a streamer to the end of it. The streamer eventually pulls the chute out, kind of like a drouge chute on a real parachute.

that primitive ballistics table look good and it seems like it would work as long as you use a standard ammo. Maybe add a wind gauge and then you could really aim it
